Duane's terrible line about the children dying shifts immediately - to my ear - into propaganda speech. It's a rote line and he's repeating it. Do you think he actually believes it? Or is this the sort of thing he's been telling himself ever since he watched all those young people die during the Foi-Hellick Affair? Where's the crime? Anything unfortunate that happens to these shrine girls - where's the crime?

I've kinda felt a little lonely being sympathetic to Duane in these past few pages (which is a change now from feeling a little alone in feeling Quigley is reasonably sympathetic despite his flaws). Duane is not in his right mind right now. In some ways he seems barely able to tell reality from fantasy (like when he asserted that the girl had been beaten when he knew better). He's literally had his mind jerked around like a puppet on a string and forced into a situation he'd never have agreed to. It's an awful lot to handle on top of the literally inhuman things he normally has to handle. I mean, yeah, this ugliness is inside him and this has let it come out. That's true. But given his history, where he came from, and most importantly what was done to him and his daughter... I dunno, I just think it's to his credit that it took this incredibly stressful situation to push him to this point. Most of us are quite capable of demonising and dehumanising people for very much less then what Duane has personally experienced (or thinks he has experienced) at the hands of Cresce and its queen.
