Through extensive use of archival clips, documentarian Don Hahn explores how Walt Disney Animation Studios broke out of their mid-1980s box-office slump. The film focuses on the group of young, ambitious animators and filmmakers, such as Tim Burton and "Toy Story" director John Lasseter, who struggled against outside competition and old-guard studio executives within the company to reclaim Disney's legacy as a producer of world-class animated entertainment.

Yes, and Dreamworks had made a few films before shrek like Prince of Egypt (oh what an amazing film) and antz which I’ve got mixed feelings about. Everyone wants to say a bugs life ripped off antz. But it’s very clear knowing that Jeffery saw the storyboards for a bugs life at the Toy Story premiere courtesy of John Lassater. So I’m pretty sure Antz ripped off a bugs life since a bug’s life was in production longer before antz was even thought of. Also antz’s Animation looks rushed compared to a bug’s life which is an obvious sign.

In the best case scenario it’s done with everyone agreeing and that helps the movie/tv industry because an idea that doesn’t work one place with one group of people may work somewhere else. Jeffery left Disney and teamed up with Spielberg and made Shrek. One of Michael and Jeffrey’s coworkers at Paramount didn’t move to Disney but went from Paramount to create the Fox TV Network. When you are an entertainment executive there is only so many places you can go similar to athletes going to new teams.

2024-02-19 10:14:50 +0000 UTCI hadn’t sat down and watched this documentary before because I had heard it was a somewhat sanitized version of the truth for publicity purposes. If anyone is interested in learning more about what was in the movie and the drama that came after check out the book DisneyWar that covers from 1984-2003 in the Disney story. I did enjoy the documentary though to put faces to names and to see the archive footage. I agree with checking out An American take the first Spielberg cartoon and Splash one of Tom Hanks first hits.
