He Answered

With broken hearts in their utter devastation, Israel had nowhere to turn but to Yahweh. They cried out to him for mercy, finally admitting their need for him. And when their repentant cries rang out, the Lord answered them by raising up yet another champion-deliverer.

Sometimes it takes us until we are completely overwhelmed to admit our need for God’s help. Oh, that it weren’t so! That we would choose to trust him and depend on him before our hearts are broken open in devastating loss. He is mercifully near all who call on him. Our pain is not a punishment. It is an indicator of our need for God’s help. May we cry out to God, no matter where we are today. He is ever so near, and he will answer us.

Merciful Lord, I am so grateful that you listen to my cries for help. When I’m in desperate need of you, you do not turn me away. You are my God, and I will look to you through seasons of plenty and depend on you through seasons of turmoil. Be near!
