Habits

Good morning!

A lot of what I do for fun is research about health and our brains. I know. That probably doesn't sound like fun to a lot of people but I love it!

One of the people who I listen to talks about habits and a lot of what she talks about sounds very suspicious for "grace." Although she doesn't use that word, I'd say that's what it amounts to.

The habits we form are usually a coping mechanism since we are built to survive at all costs. Sometimes the habits we form in certain seasons of life were the things we did to survive and perhaps at this point in our lives we are seeing that they do more harm than good. We may have grown in different ways and we have the capacity to see these habits differently now.

Rather than being so driven to control our habits and so hard on ourselves for having the habits, we could start to see them for what they are: just old habit tracks in our brains. The less energy we put on them (whether that is positive or negative energy) they more likely they will die off. Putting energy onto good habits will help them grow.

Even the energy of beating ourselves up over yesterday's bad choices is putting energy on them and making sure the stay and that we stay stuck!

So, just like God has grace with us, we should and can have grace with ourselves and start to see those triggering thoughts that lead to the habits as just passing by.....see them as floaters and not give them any extra painful energy even with our thoughts!
