Fear

Encounter God’s Heart...
The Fear of the Lord

The Hebrew word for fear means holy awe, deepest respect, to venerate, worship, adore, to regard as holy. This holy fear anchors us. It keeps us rooted and grounded and inspires us with awestruck wonder. As we set him apart in our hearts as holy, it stirs a desire to please him more than any other. The fear of God keeps us from defiling ourselves. We want every thought, word, and action to honor him.

A spirit of fear is not the same thing as the fear of the Lord. God does not give us a spirit of fear or panic, but he does insist we approach him with reverence, awe, humility, and surrender. We have always known that love is the foundation of our relationship with God, but now the Lord wants us to discover the fear of the Lord as equally foundational. Love and the fear of God are the twin truths that stabilize the church.

Father, I long to live before you in holiness and complete surrender. I want every motive and thought to honor you. Help me to guard my heart at all times and to remain undefiled from this world. I want to know you as you yearn to be known. May love and the fear of the Lord keep me close to you.

Isaiah 8:13
The Passion Translation

“Fear nothing and no one except Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies! Honor him as holy. Be in awe before him with deepest reverence!”

It took me a long time to understand fear as it is meant in the Bible, and not how it means in this day and age. Huge difference!
