You may want to discover a wonderful video series from The Bible Project. You can go to their website, YouTube or follow the year long Bible plan on YouVersion that I have been doing this year. The rich understanding of the original language and context takes everything you read to a new level.

I am currently in Nehemiah and love this book because of the analogy I find for doing our work and yet holding our “weapon” in the other hand. If you don’t know the story, Nehemiah leads a rebuilding of the wall and is harassed at every turn. The people are under constant threat and so rather than stopping their work to fight, they work with their tool in one hand and their weapon in the other. They never let down their guard.

Nehemiah shows great resolve and focus throughout, never falling for the tricks of the enemy but staying consistent. In 52 days, the job was complete. They said it couldn’t be done and the job was too big, but through God’s direction and the people’s diligence, they succeeded.

We, too, can feel at times that the problems are too large or complicated, their is too much opposing us or that there are too many battles we have to fight. But God can accomplish so much through our willingness to keep up our guard against distraction and discouragement and faithfully do the work in His time and in His way!
