I'm with Alex in regards to race/class combos; let all races be all classes. Lore can exist without being a roadblock to the aesthetic leanings of players. And lore should never, ever, ever be a roadblock to a persons enjoyment and identification with their in-game representation. Druids can be historically night elven, and mostly night elven. And someone who wants to play a lore-heavy druid is certainly able to play one and identify with the race as part of the lore. But the person who wants to play the cute gnome druid because they feel demonstrably more connected to small races or they want RP their fun concept? Why is that sense of fun and identification less valid than the first? The lore being what it is shouldn't mean the rare gnome can't take up the path. The player characters are the exceptional, the rare, the special. They break convention and defy norms. I love the lore. I do. But, as I teach my creative writing students, one must be willing to kill their figurative babies. When a writer cleaves to an idea that prevents the growth one's story, or prevents the acknowledgement/possibility of a better idea, or keeps one from expanding the concept in broader way, one has damaged that's story's potential in a noteworthy way. Using the lore as a shield to stand in the way of opening the class/race combos seems to me in that vein. The cleaving to an idea with no real defensible purpose behind it. Beyond that, the idea of race and class restrictions has always felt like antiquated design to me; a relic of the bygone days of Dungeons and Dragons 2nd edition and the like. And it carries the whiffs of the kind of restrictive social paradigm that I'm just not comfortable with.
