It almost sounds like an auto gain on the mic. When you mute or are silent for a period the mixer gains up the mic then brings the gain down once you start talking. The argument against this is that your voice should be louder to begin with but doesn't seem to be. As Alan mentioned, it doesn't come through on the recording, or not loudly anyway.
