Regarding the question whether you have to finish Korthia before being able to go to Zereth Mortis, the answer is no, Korthia is not a requirement. I didn't play for a year and when I logged back in, I got offered both breadcrumb quests, one for Korthia and one for Zereth Mortis. Having said that, from a story perspective you may want to follow the Korthia campaign first anyway because some things in the Zereth Mortis campaign may not make sense if you don't but technically it is not a requirement.
