The Richard Garriott game was Tabula Rasa. Thanks for answering my question regarding agency! I should have worded it better, though, since I was talking about character agency rather than player agency. The disconnect in the Kyrian campaign is about the writers choosing to have our close Kyrian friend, who we've adventured with and are in the process of taking a soul to Oribos with, completely ignorant of the Arbiter being out of commission and souls going straight to the Maw. Our character was totally silent about an extremely important and relevant fact despite many opportunities to share it. It's not about the player making a choice to say something or not, but rather that if our characters can only fight and are otherwise uncommunicative and unresponsive, it might not be worth having our characters appear more present in the narrative. Speaking of Final Fantasy 14, in the base game there's an awful lot of cutscenes where your character stands there motionless, watching someone run off or open a cursed urn, etc, and then dealing with the consequences in subsequent quests. It feels *so* weird and awkward for our characters to stand there like mannequins instead of saying or doing anything.
