Quest Academy: Saviours (Chapters 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71 and 72)
Added 2024-05-21 11:41:38 +0000 UTCHey Everyone,
So, there's 10 chapters this week. I'm really curious to know what you all think of them. It's been a good writing week and I'm probably going to be mulling over the ending for the next few days before tackling it properly.
I've been having a lot of fun with it, and hope you enjoy!
Loved seeing all the comments over the last week. I saw some concerns about how I'm going to wrap everything up in so few chapters. I always have that fear, it seems to be a recurring theme. :D
Someday I'll learn how to pace, but that day is not today!

Ch 68 spells Erika as Erica many times

2024-07-10 21:03:41 +0000 UTCI agree with this one. Gallant was chosen to be a hero by his mom at birth (she gave him his hero name then) even before his powers manifested. His initial ability was hype and the way I understood it from his discussion with Sal in book 2, it was more a self motivation/belief type of power. The more he believed in himself and his awesomeness, the more awesome he could be. But he was essentially trained from the time he could walk and completed his first dungeon at age 8. He also said something along the lines of you do what you have to do even if you are gibbering in terror on the inside. I think everything he was forced to do as a child caused the mental trauma that is not allowing him to use his evolved power, which basically brings into reality his emotional reactions (what he believes becomes real evolved into what he feels becomes real).

2024-05-28 15:58:36 +0000 UTCRandom question bc i don't remember if it's explicitly said on the first book, but is Divinity Desi? I've been reading her as such because of her surname, but i don't remember physical descriptions or any cultural aspects being mentioned on the books that would confirm or deny this

2024-05-27 21:37:31 +0000 UTCMaybe, but he hasn't shown any mental skills that could work. He has a hard enough time controlling his own emotions by his own admission. Perfect perfects the body and the physical function along with optimizing the skills with their body and helps them learn new ones if implanted. At least that is my understanding of it but could totally be wrong. If her ability somehow overwrites his brain chemistry and uses that to control people then probably, but if it uses energy not sure. I can see it happening both ways, that it cannot because its a psychological and not a physical ability and perfect is more of a physical concept. On the other hand since perfect can help optimize what is part of the body including essence, then it might be able to take his mythcrafter essence and combat hers, but that's if Perfect isn't optimizing his physical body to better channel essence but can't influence essence itself. Would be interesting to see which way it plays out.

2024-05-27 21:20:15 +0000 UTCI actually want longer chapters, not condensed ones 😁

2024-05-27 21:17:47 +0000 UTCI think it was actually mentioned twice in the chapter where they try on the new equipment. And I think Rochelle even asked if he was sure if he wanted her to have the jacket for the tower

2024-05-27 21:13:34 +0000 UTCI wonder if the Perfect ability will/would kick in and perfect his mental skills to drive her out of his mind 🧐

2024-05-27 21:10:29 +0000 UTCIf not a necklace, maybe a suit or the back brace thing that has been discussed. Even if people couldn’t use it for extended times, like dungeon runs, then for training it would be good. Get your best workout for an hour, or martial arts.

2024-05-27 12:34:46 +0000 UTCWill the next chapters be posted today(May, 27, 2024) or Tomorrow (May 28, 2024)? Me...I am hoping for today 😄. Been constantly checking. Dying to find out what's next. No rush. Just a bit excited. *(Dates based on the day(s) of the week of previous posts.) Edit: Going to make my constant checking into a game so I will edit this post with a period(.) Everytime I comeback to check. Starts here:(.1.2 .3.4 .5....9.....14......20.) Well the game is over now. Looks like I checked back a total of 21 times today. No counting game for tomorrows date.

2024-05-24 16:20:32 +0000 UTCThe only thing is Brophy has the potential to be a nightmare. But even with out the locket to keep him calm he last how long in an academy with thousands of students and didn’t make a disturbance unlike Erika. Also Brophy may have terrifying abilities but he’s also actively working on getting better with his trauma, he also doesn’t have the ability to literally enslave anyone and violate their mind because he can. Like Nero she has the ability to NOT read minds but still does, and even used her ability to make people get out of her away like we see her do in the cafeteria when she made everyone move their chairs in sequence to make room for her, instead of slipping around them. She violated their minds to make them move for her on a whim and shows that she doesn’t care how she uses her ability against anyone, no matter how small. Right now Brophy has the potential to be a nightmare, Erika is already an unrepentant one.
Nozzy
2024-05-24 01:18:38 +0000 UTCI think Erika is being set up for redemption. Despite her Tyrant-like appearance, I think Sal is starting to get a sense that she might be a victim of her own powers. If he can find a way to actually connect with her, he can make her an amazing ally with the ability to massively increase a group’s cohesion and coordination.
Jesse
2024-05-24 00:28:19 +0000 UTCI think Gallant has a really fragile Hero Complex. He’s been trained I how to act the part, but it doesn’t seem like it was ever his choice, so it’s not really who he is. With his level of power, and his fragile emotional state, he’s just one bad day away from being a pretty major villain.
Jesse
2024-05-24 00:17:51 +0000 UTCI think that’s the real question with this book : Erika vs Gallant. Pure Logic vs Pure Emotion. Erika seems like an unrepentant villain in the making, but the same logic that makes her so cold can be used against her if the right argument can be made to show the true value of a different way. Gallant seems like an unhinged nightmare in the making, and I’m truly scared of him being powered up with the Perfect ability. I’m actually rooting for a redemption arc for the little Mind Tyrant.

2024-05-23 03:14:37 +0000 UTCThe thing that struck me with these chapters is that with the introduction of the Perfect weave, I could at least say Sal could only use it to the limits of his body. In these chapters it significantly improved his body. It really opens up the overpowered Gary Stu debates I see on reddit in the future. But then my argument is superman is still only in one place and can’t be everywhere. That said, I wonder how much more he is going to grow in the next books with this leap forward. He still has technology to make, gates to open, teams to build, and hasn’t made a tiny dent in the demons…. Yeah, I’m not against a leap in power yet. Heck, Barry can still take him out quite quickly, as can Erika. Until he develops a mental defence he’s still not that strong.
Andrew Tobin
2024-05-23 03:08:30 +0000 UTCIt’s really interesting how far, offscreen mostly, that Rochelle has gone from greedy, manipulative bitch to someone we like.
Andrew Tobin
2024-05-23 03:02:18 +0000 UTCThe thing that keeps me going back and forward on Prestige is that it’s tough to see how she sees her son. We almost feel like she sees the danger beneath, but she still wants him “fixed”:
Andrew Tobin
2024-05-23 03:01:00 +0000 UTCI kind of don’t want to see her lose the jacket to Sal. It’s tailored and fashioned for a healer - so it’s not Sal’s fit anyway.
Andrew Tobin
2024-05-23 02:59:22 +0000 UTCI feel like we are seeing the beginnings of an arch nemesis. Evil, controlling Erika, versus our loveable and bad ass Sal. I mean hero needs a villain and what a villain she would make being able to control minds.

2024-05-22 23:06:12 +0000 UTCSal has gotten so much better with his revolver, and even with the quicker recharge rate of his cartridges, it would be cool if he had a off hand something as a last line of defence. For when his cartridge are recharging and does not have time to swap them out. Also I am surprised his belt does not have a mini special storage for collecting crafting materials.

2024-05-22 19:38:02 +0000 UTCHonestly, in Sal's place I would've cut off her power permanently while he still can, bc after she gets off that suppression necklace she would fs try to manipulate him again

2024-05-22 18:49:10 +0000 UTCI'm hoping Prestige and/or Sal say something to quest and at the very least she is kicked off the Saviours roster. I'm not that comfortable with her being deemed a "Saviour" with that kind of behaviour/personality (the same thing goes for Brophy if I'm being honest, like i kinda agree with potion-high-Sal that he's dangerous but just hides it better)
Davi(d)
2024-05-22 18:37:47 +0000 UTCI was just coming here to ask exactly this, i feel like it's the second one as well, but would very much like to know for sure

2024-05-22 18:33:30 +0000 UTCI'm Surprised the argument wasn't made that yes Sal coulld Copy Establised heros Powers and become another Gallent. but be could also through his Weave Experimentation and Myth Creathing. help train and equip 100's of 'Almost' Gallents.
Mark Palmer
2024-05-22 17:28:24 +0000 UTCIt's going to be interesting when it comes time to give up the Jacket, as it is techinically a Loan. Do you think she ask to keep it or ask if Sal can make her another one maybe only Rare Grade.
Mark Palmer
2024-05-22 17:23:41 +0000 UTCErika this, Erika that. Will she even have a team that wants to do runs with her after they get out of school. Kind of hard to be a controller if you don't have a team.

2024-05-22 09:58:40 +0000 UTCSo with some people saying that Erika has a nice part and that because her power is suppressed she is different, I’m going to have to disagree. Within the last chapter with her conversation with Prestige she basically admits that what she is doing is an act in order to control her team more. We are talking about the same person who as no qualms literally enslaving someone to do what she wants. Just like how she made Sal walk towards the golems last book, and admit that she made him do it in order for him to get hit on purpose because she knows best basically on how to make him use his powers “better”. Like Prestige said she sees people as pawns, and not as people. Chatfield being the best control brings his people back alive even if he goes back and forth on being an ass. She doesn’t care, like in last book she hides in the shadow and moves people around. She was told not to use Sal and protect him by chatfield, she disregards that because she knows best. She doesn’t see people as people and only thinks of herself and thinks she should be on top and only she can do it, like how she said Sal doesn’t deserve #3 spot even tho she didn’t do anything significant to propel her towards the top except isolate her self and accumulate animosity from everyone around her. Personally if she did everything she did to Sal to me, like Brophy I would be looking for a way to ruin her if not out right kill her. She is no comrade and is a liability to everyone’s but her own safety. Giving her a position of power as a controller is just further enabling her, and I don’t think she will ever change even if she gets into the same situations she puts other in herself. She is the type to double down and not admit she was wrong. She is the type that she was sacrifice everyone into extinction in order to win, and just as untrustworthy and dangerous as the demons to everyone around her. Everything else I’m of the same opinion as everyone where I’m enjoying the character development and interactions between the rest of the team.
Nozzy
2024-05-22 08:54:32 +0000 UTCI love Roche and the jacket. But I can’t believe with the prep done for the earlier games that she wasn’t introduced to the jacket earlier. Especially with grappling hooks. I love all the character development.
Lisa Johnson
2024-05-22 04:02:01 +0000 UTCBecause his ability involves his emotional state and he basically goes paranoid berserker after his accident/incident years before. He’s also insanely territorial for no reason. If he thought Sal would be a threat to his family or his standing, I think he’d paste him.
David
2024-05-22 01:10:22 +0000 UTCI thought the same thing. It seems like it’s meant to be a training ability you’d want to turn off or replace after intense conditioning, academic study, or really any training were complete.
David
2024-05-22 01:03:48 +0000 UTCOohh Sal is go show these guys what he's made of for sure. Can hardly wait for the next set of chapters. You've made the tower exercise super engaging and fun to read. Prestige is a good teacher and moderator too. Love how Rochelle is coming out of her shell. I hope Ioseph gets more development too. Runes are really interesting and I suspect you are going to do all sorts of cool things with them in the future. Keep up the great work and tank you for the chapters.
Michelle Ray
2024-05-22 00:52:12 +0000 UTCI won't be surprised if those hunters go after sal in the future to go after his loot. she wouldn't have trusted those two at all most likely if she had her ability. Neurodivergent...is possible. I bet she heard enough thoughts that her thinking process adapted to not lose her mind at first. But after getting used to her ability she made a choice. She built up walls as to not get hurt and puts quite a lot of pressure on herself. The only problem is that she made that choice and made another one that no one can be trusted and only she can see the bigger picture and do what's right. No one else, period, full stop. She is also the kind of person who likes putting people into boxes, which in her case is influenced by her listening to their thoughts. And if you break out of those boxes, she just makes a new one. So, she thinks she truly knows them but just like divinity with her visions she is missing context and has blinders on missing the larger picture. We saw that in 71/72.

2024-05-21 23:38:48 +0000 UTCChap 67 "In the few short moments of piece that he had left", piece should be 'peace'. In general, I'm impressed with the quality of grammar on all of your Patreon chapters.

2024-05-21 23:24:11 +0000 UTCChapter 68 made Rochell get added to my favorite character list. Divinity, Upgrade, Berry, Rochell, and his old tournament teammates. Although I like prestige too. I hope she sticks around after these team tests. Maybe she joins sal's actual hero team. Just think divinity the controller/offense, Rochell the healer/offense, Sal support/offense, [suggest a defense], and maybe gallant/Lucia/assassin lady?...now I'm thinking of offense people, there aren't many we know as characters. Hell Berry could be great at offense with those knives he makes now. So maybe another support/offense person or someone? thoughts? Also, I wonder how divinity will react when she see his new physique or Hannah for that matter. Our boy just got ripped lol.
Travis Nevins
2024-05-21 23:18:42 +0000 UTCshe is one of the manipulating types. There may be a nicer version of her, but its deep down at this point. Sure her power made it so she could hear people thoughts, which made her trust people less, but her actions and thought process is a self-fulling prophesy of cultivating negative emotions and thoughts towards her. It a nasty cycle, but I don't think her ability evolved either. Nor do I think she will truly learn a lesson till she gets out of the acdemy or something really crazy and bad happens that forces her break that box she put herself in.
Travis Nevins
2024-05-21 23:08:15 +0000 UTCMaby her cold demeanor is caused by her second ability that sal noted something that would give her extra focus on the task how to complete it and all that stuff, but just like gallant it out grew her/evolved beyond her capabilities. Im thinking this because while shes wearing the supression necklace she has shown more and more emotions, but after affects are still lingerimg the same we see with gallant.
Joran Spans
2024-05-21 22:35:18 +0000 UTCI swear to God this ending. I hope Sal shows them what he is capable of and shuts them up. I really like the pacing of the chapters and the whole tower ark.

AJ
2024-05-21 19:20:47 +0000 UTCThat being said, I like how Roche and Sal are growing. The Perfect ability is a hell of a short-cut, but it's a shortcut to competency, not excellence, which makes it strong, but not overpowered. I understand that pulling members of the team aside or handicapping their actions will push the others to show more of their ability, but this "tower run" was framed as a team activity. Now they are 4 floors in, and the five of them have made exactly 1 decision as a team, and that was to split up at the start of floor 1. I'm enjoying what's happening, but the team really needs a chance to work together, or it will feel like even the concept of the tower dive was a bait and switch.
Ben Cooper
2024-05-21 18:24:41 +0000 UTCI'm not sure if Erika is neurodivergent, traumatised, trained with a hyper-focus on the worst-case-scenario to the point she treats it as the default, or if it's some combination of the three. I have trouble envisioning this cold, calculating individual coming from the empathetic and caring Neil. I don't recall any mention of Erika's mother, but if she was killed by a betrayal or incompetence on the part of a teammate, that would go a long way towards explaining this mindset. Just the idea that people are horrible in their own thoughts seems insufficient to justify that unassailable lack of trust and expectation that sacrifices must be made. I would expect that mind reading would only help prove that people can be caring and selfless, as well as rational, well-reasoned, and competent.
Ben Cooper
2024-05-21 18:18:58 +0000 UTCAfter re-reading, I want to touch on the Erika Problem. In comments on previous chapters (namely the train station confrontation), I suggested that she seems to be some kind of narcissist. While not a full-blown sociopath (she's not performatively charismatic enough), she absolutely has the hallmarks of some level of anti-social personality disorder. But, from a character standpoint, I think we're being led to believe it's because she got her powers before she learned the life lesson that human beings cannot control the emotions they feel or the thoughts that they have, only how they respond to them. The innate human dissonance between messy, intrusive thought and executively-decided action has made her fundamentally unable to connect with another human being on an emotional level. However, paradoxically, her entire metric of self-worth is predicated on efficiency and being 'the best,' but the metric of that worth is external to her. Case in point, a person with true self-assured worth wouldn't respond as she did at not getting the top slot in the student rankings. She craves, on some level, Prestige's validation. The point at which the character became irredeemable for me was when she said that if she has to leave someone behind, her "job" as controller is to get the rest of the team to see that her utilitarian calculus is always logically right. Her casual disregard for the lives of her teammates--thinking of them as tools or resources, rather than as complex people--means that she absolutely shouldn't be within 100 miles of a Controller position (which I'm not entirely convinced that the character actually wants, but rather it is something that she feels is logical). She might be able to make a good Offense, but her ability to integrate into a team is functionally impaired. And the sad part is that, given the near apocalyptic setting of this world, her kind of cold, utilitarian "greater good" mentality means that she's likely to be given power. It makes me angry.
Lacan
2024-05-21 18:12:49 +0000 UTCErika is dangerous. I can't envision a 180 degree change in character that would not make her an asset to any team. If her claim ro be more powerful than Neuro then she is a danger to the Academy students.

2024-05-21 17:13:55 +0000 UTCYet what she is effectively doing is enslaving them to her will. CEO can use their employees but can’t enslave them, she’s effectively a slave master imo.

2024-05-21 17:03:35 +0000 UTCI wasn't looking forward to this exercise but it's been super fun and engaging. I like how you're toeing the line with Sal gaining tons of potent powers but needing time for them to all come to maturation. I am minorly concerned about the ramp of his grown curve though, though watching Gallant is a good indicator of how far he has to go and is a nice regular reminder to us readers of that. I'm getting a little bit tired of the way the story dances around the topic of team agency with a controller but hopefully we'll see that plot point moved forward more with Prestige's assessment of Erica. Plenty of CEOs who treat their workers as disposable but understand the need to build long term institutional trust by inviting autonomy.

2024-05-21 16:22:23 +0000 UTCI would stay as far away from Erika as possible. 2024-05-21 15:00:08 +0000 UTCLoved the chapters! Fantastic pacing and character development, got super invested almost immediately! Only issue I could even find was "piece" instead of "peace" partway though, you really hit your stride with this batch!

2024-05-21 14:41:29 +0000 UTCActually have a pronunciation question that has some (very very minor) story implications (and apologies if this has been answered previously): is the Perfect ability to be pronounced as in "a perfect score" or as in "he was trying to perfect his technique"? I'm leaning toward the latter, given how it seems to be working in this set of chapters, but the implication of the pronunciation difference isn't that you do things perfectly but rather that it works to refine you.

2024-05-21 14:38:52 +0000 UTCnooooooooooooo, why would you do that to me and end on this cliffhanger?? can't wait for those pricks to be humbled by Sal's performance

2024-05-21 14:22:56 +0000 UTCSal has AOE shells doesn't he?

2024-05-21 14:13:30 +0000 UTCI know but he's obviously looking down on Sal a bit and the slimy guy is just follow the same vibe. He calls him out as the auctioneers son

2024-05-21 13:56:36 +0000 UTCRob isn't the snake like guy, he is the guy snake guy is trying to get close to probably to kill him or someting

2024-05-21 13:54:23 +0000 UTCI want to say Erica should be pushed out or if her view on team mates gets known I don't see how she would ever find a team that would accept her. Also damn cliff hangers.

2024-05-21 13:53:21 +0000 UTCHey, this is a great pace! You have found your ‘runner’s high’ !

2024-05-21 13:07:23 +0000 UTCThat girl is a broken soul i almost feel sorry for her but than remember it her choice to be a brat and how has she not when reading his mind come across the cost on his body when using ability’s his body not ready for or compatible her jealousy is blinding her logical reasoning love the development and growth great work

2024-05-21 13:04:06 +0000 UTCLoved the chapters. I'm confused around Gallant and where his personality fits into things. On one hand, he's really likeable, on the other we know he has issues and Sal doesn't trust him and might be an enemy but I'm not really seeing or feeling why yet. I'll do a re-read upon release and maybe I'll feel differently but I mostly feel confused when it comes to him. The Erika reveals and motivations are fascinating though. I'm enjoying seeing more of her personality and the lines that Sal is looking at her body, is she potentially interested in him? I'm curious to find out. Great to see Rochelle in action too.

hey man
2024-05-21 12:34:34 +0000 UTCGreat chapters, I already hate Rob. Erica is better this floor, basically the same but minus the spite. Sal needs to embarrass the hunters going with them

2024-05-21 12:31:17 +0000 UTCIs there a condensed version of the chapters? Or a way you could do that?
