So, as you can see from my terrible handwriting, my mechanics are going to be put in place soon. This is just a sneak peak at my thought process and will give you an idea of what could be expected. As always, the story is a work in progress and things could change.

This is just a nice reference guide for me, the excel spreadsheets will come later for balancing. But as it stands now, what you can see in the image are the main avenues for each character to earn their Experience!

F.A.C.Q.S

Faction
This is Experience that is earned by the Villain or Hero Faction. In the case of the General of Light, his Faction would be a combination of his Army. The Royal Family that he protects and the land that they granted to him. Even when the General of Light is logged out of the game, his Faction is earning him experience. I've classified this experience type as Contributory.

Alignment

Alignment will act as a Multiplier Scale. It's calculated by how closely the Player's actions are to their alignment. If a Villain does something Heroic, they'll score a 1 which is the lowest result and default experience modifier.

If they do something Villainous, they'll be closer to a 5 which is the highest result and the maximum experience modifier. Each grade is based on the severity of the action.

By itself, the Alignment modifier is not responsible for generating experience, it can only amplify experience gain from the other categories.

Class

When the Player completes objectives for their Class, they will gain Class experience. In the case of the Dread Pirate, it could involve him assembling a crew or gaining a new ship. Alternatively, James could have a specific Class quest that was created in the Character Creation section of Abidden.

Additionally, when the Player levels up their character, they will eventually hit a rank cap and need to undertake a particular Class quest to be able to move onto the next rank. An example of this, was when Helena reached the highest level for her class, Archer, she needed to undertake her Mastery quest to be able to rank up and become the Celestial Archer.

The different level requirements and ranks will be posted in a separate post in the future. You can see from the picture above, that the headings are already listed out as - S.M.U.L.D.A.G

Quest
Quests will result in the Player achieving rewards and experience for fulfilling a set of requirements, usually delivered by an NPC (Non-Playable Character). There is a hierarchy of quest ranks, but they'll be explained in a future post.

Quest Experience is typically delivered individually, although there are some exceptions such as group quests or raids. In those instances, experience can be shared.

System
Acts of the Gods (Locke). This is when the Pantheon of the Gods make decisions that have consequences for the Heroes and Villains. These events can be classified as World Events and will pop up every now and again.

An example of an Act of God, would be divine intervention. If a war was to occur, a God could teleport Players to that instance and give them special victory conditions. As a reward, Players would gain experience, equipment, reputation etc.

There won't be preferential treatment, and Heroes and Villains alike will only face an Act of God in specific circumstances. This experience gain is individual and is usually delivered conditionally.

There will be logic behind everything! I hate plot armour and the world dropping at the feet of the MC's. This is my provisional plan for Experience gain in the game. Later updates will show Quests, Item grades, NPC and Player rankings, Nemesis system and a lot more.

I'm not sure if these updates are of interest, but I thought I'd share them anyways. There aren't any spoilers in here for the actual story. :)

So the Alignment is pretty much determined from the beginning. The Heroes that are currently in the game, and the Villains that will join the game. They're extreme opposites designed to fight / antagonise each other. As it stands there are no Neutral players. They can play neutrally, and earn no modifier, but the multiplier would be an encouragement for them to embrace their Villain or Hero role. Does that answer the question? :D

James Northman

How would the Alignment multiplier work for those with a Neutral alignment.
