Naming day is this world's equivalent of a birthday, but instead it is being celebrated on the day a person received their name. Plenty of people do not know of when they were born (like Zoe and Danica who were both orphans) that's why majority of the population celebrate Naming day instead of birthdays.

Part of the reason Melinda cried is because her favorite person Ellaine, unexpectedly participated in the dress up. Melinda is very fond of Ellaine, because Ellaine is the one who named her. Many years ago Melinda was nothing but a formless, restless and unfocused spirit bound to the building. One day Ellaine and the current Proprietor was testing out spells and they decided to give the spirit a discernible form. Ellaine merged Melinda's unruly spiritual essence on the first object she was able to grab, which is one of her dark colored dresses. That's why Melinda's clothing is very similar to Ellaine's.
