Omfg, I want a hat or shirt that says "I defy the heavens" and has a lil umbrella on it

I took it to mean worldly possessions (like your shoes) stop you from living/speaking/breathing freely. You become choked by all your worries and belongings etc

Jared

"(…) The true men of old, and I suppose the true women too, all slept deeply without dreaming and woke without worries. They ate simple meals, took things as they came, and treated death like life- something they didn’t ask for, but could still lightly accept. (…)" Don't we all? After all, the difference between us and the old ones is just time (and progress). We are essentially the same. They had the same worries, just limited to their worldview.

KCoeus

Hm tempting river puns, but probably better to note the areas of deep cool water are the best place for a fish to rest and grow strong, especially before it tries to become a dragon. Seems a fair note of a good place to be unaffected by wind and storm while food and succor grows. Appropriately so for healers I think.

Veridescent

"No use yelling at the clouds. I can’t cut them with a sword or stab them with a spear, or cure them with a pill, but can’t I defy the heavens with an umbrella?" Banger of a line!

William Johnson

Or maybe we got jebaited by a possible Sunday chapter

fujaks

Maybe a miracle ghost king interlude now?

Robert Mullins

That is a *hell* of a line to end the book on. My word. Also we're seeing a lot of heaven defying lately. I'm deeply curious whether the other kingdom spanning sects are undergoing their own revolutions, as I had rather imagined we'd see an aggressive expansion into Broadsky Kingdom from their neighbors, now no longer forced into an alliance against Iron Gorge. Now that I think on it, it doesn't seem feasible that Iron Gorge could have withstood so many powerful sects alone if they weren't siphoning their fates as well.

Sol

Disciple Shu is indeed an extremely suitable sort of girl. Knocks off the old guard and helps ensure that the sect survives an apocalypse. A Heaven defying umbrella for post-Ancient Crane times.

Felix Giron

Assassin Shu'sh with an Umbrella

Daft Dolphin

Lol that's not Starseive, it's Outspread Discombobulated, who (along with other earthly/mortal diviners) inadvertently helped Starseive shuffle Tian and Hong towards their fortituous encounters.

EvilLittleThing

I wonder if it will really take 200 years for them to leave the mountain. I could see it going either way, but somehow I don’t think so. There are too many current events to learn about, but then I guess the question is whether those events require the main characters’ participation. Like many cultivation novels, we may end up fast-forwarding at times in order to better portray the long-livedness of those on the immortal path—or maybe this period will see our main characters focused entirely on monastery politics. Regardless, I am happy to be a fly on the wall for Shu committing her first murder.

kapo

Lol, I thought i was the only one that found that annoying.

Endgame

Favorite philosopher ever mentioned! Woot woot

G&S Gaming

I mean, that's just standard policy for the food/service industry. It's the selling her off as a concubine that's actually immoral.

Andrew Lechner

I hadn't understood that wrapping up this weekend meant weekend posts, oh what joy! I clicked my Patreon shortcut in the same manner as an addict searches the rug for missed crumbs, despite knowing it would be futile, but lo! A surprise chapter appears.

Johan Persson

Thank you Warby for being pretty much the only online writer I’ve read for the past like year and a half if not longer using “let alone” correctly. For some reason everyone always puts the harder or more scandalous thing first and the easier or more accessible thing second which is the exact opposite of what that phrase is supposed to be. Example I remember not verbatim but close enough “he shouldn’t even be able to walk forward under this much pressure let alone crawl.” The character is walking in this scenario. Makes no sense and is just a common thing I see so much that it’s gotten under my skin.

Kain

I know Outspread is based on a Daoist character, but he reminds me a lot of Diogenes sometimes lol

Noroh

It's true though the heavens rain and one just has to block it out, I can't cut the rain but I can ignore it with an umbrella.

Josiah Elliott

this was a fun chapter, poor Shu and her fellow sect members, curious how the mountain reopening will be taken

Baines

The characters in the last two chapters will come back forsure that’s promising

Gerald Ransom Jr

"How many times must I remind you? Smile. Smile as you serve." - takes one line for me to justify death.

Andrew Goebel

Ghost king, when?

Robert Mullins

Whoops. Need to fix that.

Nonnyor Business

Oooh man after reading the chapter title and seeing Shu I thought warby was going to go all Slumrat dark for a bit. Also why is Starsieve hanging out in her laundry room?

Thomas Lawless

Hell yeah glad to see Shu stand up for herself like that. Also fun to see Outspread again. I love a philosophical madman. The "defy the heavens with an umbrella" line feels like some proper wisdom I like it a lot

Liam Zay

What could be more filial than serving your master tea that helps him find rest and end a stressful period of his life?

Robert Mullins

Im thinking she was more the blade wielded by the cabal that took over after the sectmaster died; i dont think she could have concocted a tasteless poison that'd kill a heavenly realm person. Not that she didnt have any agency in the assassination, just that she wasnt the primary mover. Maybe im just not giving her enough credit.

Gardor

Quite a chapter to follow all the discussions of filial piety.

Anon.

Hah, nice reference. I didn't notice that.

Robert Mullins

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Gentlemen I learn that the orchid (which shu says is out of season) is associated with loyalty and fidelity. I suspect I’d need to read more deeply into the topic than wikipedia offers to understand the plumb blossom and chrysanthemum references, but that’s quite deep enough for me, :)

Matt DiMeo

Looks like the sect protecting array that they mentioned purchasing was a good idea after all

Robert Mullins

Tian and Liren should be around 19-20 now.

Robert Mullins

20? Is she older than tian and liren or has there been a timeskip or something. What age are they now?

Diarmuid McGinnity

And good on Shu, learning to solve problems before they occur instead of after.

Robert Mullins

"[...] can't I defy the heavens with an umbrella?" is a *wonderful* line.

David Bailey

Who was the god damn liar in the comments yesterday that said there wouldn't be a chapter today?

Robert Mullins

I'm glad old outspread is doing well

Chrysos au

Outspread Discombobulated is either a completely insane mortal or a descended immortal fucking around for shits and giggles and I love him regardless

Mistythread

"The gains, simply put, would far outweigh the losses for any invader" Probably losses outweigh the gains?

The Human

"She was a capable spiritual gardiner" -> Gardener Tftc!
