I constantly feel pretty insignificant about my job because it has zero to do with my degree. But I also started at entry level and was running my own store within 3 years. Every once in a while I have a moment with one of the people that works for me that has me realizing that I do actively affect these people's lives!! I've been lucky to work with people who make me want to do my best for them and it's always great to get recognition for it. Even if it's in the form of being told that you're in someone's dream blunt rotation.

As for free will, I've never really been bothered, whether it's free or predetermined. However, what you have described is something that I've heard from string theorists, that everything is connected, every decision leads to a predetermined path and predetermined outcome. Speaking of hobbits, Billy Boyd, in his 50s, has said himself that he still doesn't feel like a grown up.
