I don't know if I would go so far as to say "Fuck the arts," but I agree that we have more pressing matters to deal with right now. John Adams quote comes to mind: "I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy."
2020-05-22 14:29:53 +0000 UTC(xposted from Reddit) Good interview in general, but I gotta say, I got really irritated around 58 minutes in when Jeff starts talking about how "you can't live without the arts", and how we're going to see a surge of creativity. And how Shakespeare wrote King Lear during a pandemic Shakespeare didn't have to deal with childcare. Isaac Newton, who invented calculus during a similar time, didn't have to deal with childcare. Most of us don't need "the arts" as a reason to go on living. How about "provide for our children so they don't end up on the street"? How about all those people at their wits end because they have to hold down jobs (if they're lucky enough to have jobs, and deal with small children tearing up the house who make it almost impossible to hold down said jobs? Fuck the arts. Give me the schools back (as soon as it's safe).
