NYC Blog #13 - The Cooper Hewitt Museum

I remember buying the first model of the Dyson vacuum. It was big, yellow, and looked like one of the Transformers. But that thing could pick up dirt and dust like none other. I loved that vacuum but sadly I had to leave it behind when I moved apartments at one point. That was years ago (note the italics). And just to remind me how long ago that was, I ran into the same vacuum model at the Cooper Hewitt Museum. Apparently that vacuum was so ground breaking that it made it into a museum.😅

The Cooper Hewitt is way underrated. It’s small compared to your Met or MoMa, but it has its charm. Its exhibits are mostly around industrial and commercial design. This is great for those that appreciate the design of everyday things.

If you’ve exhausted all the popular museums and you’re down to the boutique ones, make sure to have Cooper Hewitt on top of that list.

I didn't even know the MTA uses something to mask the smell.

It's raticide, humidity and dirty grease, like everything else in the subway.

Love the Jackel/Gazelle reference! I agree with both of you about the MTA elevators. They smell because what better use of these lifts then to urinate in them. The perfume that MTA uses to try to mask the smell isn't much better.

Honestly, it’s just a cost of doing business. An extra $10 or $20 won’t kill me considering I’ve probably spent around $400 in tickets for whatever it is I’m seeing or doing. It also won’t be as bad on weekends. It’s just one more annoyance that the average driver will just swallow. I do want to see the final plan though because I do drive through NYC to get off the island. One of the plans was that if you hit a toll on the other side of the river within a certain amount of time, the fee would be waived. Honestly, if I lived in Manhattan, I’d be all for the congestion surcharge just to keep the subway fares affordable 👍

Well I avoid elevators cause they smell bad. 😂 But I gotcha, glad to know that driving works out for you. Many New Yorkers can't drive. Hopefully the congestion fee isn't too bad for private vehicles.

Silly lady, I’m a 60 year old man with bad knees that occasionally uses a cane. I may as well wear a sign on the subway that says “ATTENTION JACKALS: WOUNDED GAZELLE” 😂😂 Actually, I used to take the train in and then the subway all the time, what really killed it was waiting for train at Penn Station. Eventually I realized that It cost me less and took less time to drive with tolls and parking than it did for 4 round trip off peak LIRR tickets. Maybe if they worked on that or making the elevators safer I’d consider it. You ever see a subway elevator that’s not in a major station? You wouldn’t go near it and I know it because ladies are always carrying strollers up the escalator.

Jim Allen

You know... You can always take the subway 😁

I’ve always wanted to go here. Thanks for putting it back on my radar. I’ll think if you as I’m paying the congestion fee to get to it 😂😂
