New York Blog #24 - How to keep digital books indefinitely

I don’t know if all libraries outside NYC are like this, but one of the best things I like about borrowing digital books from the NY Public Library is that I can keep them beyond the two-week limit… by turning off wifi.

Once I’ve downloaded a borrowed book, I simply turn off the wifi so my Kindle can’t connect to the library and therefore the library can’t “erase” my book. Although the downside to this is that I can’t borrow another book until I turn on the wifi again.

And that’s why I have two Kindle readers. 😅

In picture: This Kindle reader is probably the only piece of tech that I have no need of upgrading. I’ll probably have this until it stops working.

You can check it out... The book is Insomniac City by Bill Hayes

Really!?! City trees expel more oxygen than country trees? I'm going to need to see that author's sources.

Glad I'm not the only one. It's helpful for really long books.

Ok.. fair enough. I typically force early returns because I’m into a book - I read it until I’m done otherwise I return it. Actually, kindle holding the old books in the catalog is a pain because I don’t know if I actually own it or not

It's comparable to having a website load, then suddenly you lose internet connection. The website has already loaded so you can keep reading it, but you no longer get dynamic updates on the site and can't click on any buttons.

It doesn't. After the 2 weeks the digital book goes back into circulation. Officially, you no longer have the right to "hold" the book. If you are offline, the system can't update your status. Once you get back online, your status will be updated.

My only problem with that is if the book is waitlisted you’re keeping someone else from getting it. I’m still waiting for a copy of “Life and Death of Great American Cities” to become available.

Haha I do this too! (And I probably have the same Kindle as you 😅) If I need to read something new sooner, I'll use the app on my phone.
