This week, I want to talk about true crime.
It's weird to talk about true crime to people who aren't interested in true crime. People who ARE interested will probably share my experience of being obsessed with a horrific case and wanting to talk to everybody about it, but nobody wants to hear about how back in 1976, four children in Michigan were killed and left by the side of the road and still nobody knows who did it.
It's a weird hobby, but I am a true crime junkie. I don't really like diving into all the gorey details. I don't really want to know HOW murders happened really. What I get interested in is the mystery behind unsolved murders. Things like the Zodiac killer, or the Springfield Three, or more recent cases like the murders of two girls in Delphi, Indiana, or the murder of Missy Bevers at a church in Midlothian, Texas.
I've been obsessed with all of these cases on and off. This last week, I became obsessed with the Oakland County Child Killer case. Over the last week, I've read tons of articles, watched about 8 hours of documentaries, and listened to another 8 hours or so of podcasts about the case. And I'm about halfway through a book about the case as well. It's the most interesting case I've dived into in a long time.
It's hard to explain to somebody why you would be obsessed with learning about a series of murders that happened 45 years ago. It's like, why? Do you think you're going to solve the case from your desk? Do you just like this macabre subject?
For me, I think it's more like, I don't like NOT knowing things. So when I see this mystery, like who killed these 4 kids in Oakland County, I can't help but try to get every piece of information I can about it, in the hopes that even if I don't SOLVE the case, at least my brain can be like, "This is what probably happened."
I think it's just that when I see an interesting question, I have to be able to answer it, even if it's just answering it for myself.

I love true crime because I like to try to understand why some people do what they do like I'm some psychological expert.......which I am in fact not lol

Doubt it was random break-in gone bad, because perp wore a 'disguise', so most likely knew about cameras and didn't want to be identified. I imagine the police/rangers probably investigated tactical gear angle very extensively. Using a hammer as a weapon, perhaps inflict maximum pain and disfigurement? We armchair investigators can speculate till the cows come home, but since nothing has come out in 5 years, you may be right about it being professional hit. I think something would have to be found out accidentally and then tied into the case.
2021-09-07 13:39:48 +0000 UTCYeah, it's kinda crazy. I drive down 35 pretty often and every time, I look over at the turnoff in Waxahachie and think about Missy Bevers in Midlothian. That video of the killer in tactical gear looking around the church is very creepy and has definitely stuck with me. It does look like it could be a woman, but it's so hard to tell with the tactical gear. It feels like a hitman to me. It seems like if it was somebody Missy knew, that they would be able to find out if the suspect had recently bought a full set of tactical gear. It can't be a very common purchase. It's one of those that's really hard to believe that it's unsolved. We have video of the killer. There's multiple images of their car. But nobody knows who it is.

2021-09-07 13:20:32 +0000 UTCThe Missy Bevers case was unusual - video showed someone in police tactical gear. I live in the area and speculation was that the perp may have been a female from their gait. It's been 5 years and still not solved.
