Bryan Lunduke Challenge Preview

For those of you not in the know we've got a little friendly competition going with Bryan Lunduke (the "Linux Sucks"  presentation guy, OpenSUSE board member, etc) for which of us can put linux on something ridiculous and fun.

Bryan is putting his on a puppet (you can learn more about Lunduke.com).

After striking out searching for a nice waffle iron, we decided on a hayes 1200 baud modem.

It's not just a modem anymore, it's a linux-powered time machine modem!

Voting is not open yet, so you guys get a super early preview before it goes live. It probably won't go live for 2-3 days at least as we've got to setup the voting and all that. And add that to the description.

It's also not too late for us to punch up the project a bit -- the terminator-puppet is stiff competition. So if you hae any ideas for that let us know! :D

This type of project we also think of as "essential level1" when we came up with the name level1, this type of project is what we had in mind. It's got programming, 3d printing, hardware and software hackery a good bit of fun and utility. This type of thing is a priority only because of Patreon support (this type of project would never be sponsored hahaha).

P.s. This will probably also go on the linux channel, forgot. haha!

I thought it was after 2400 baud that it stopped being 2400 baud, but there were some 1200 bps modems that were 600 baud apparently. but 56kbps were 2400 baud ;)

Wait, what? I always thought it depended on encoding. There was none back then, it was 1-to-1 bit rate to baud rate? Of course it's interesting, it's almost archaeology.

oh, some modems were 1200bps at 600 baud. Interesting?

Level1 Techs

? 1200 baud modems send 1 bit per baud. Same with 2400. More than 2400 baud sends more than one bit per baud, up to 56kbps which is still 2400 baud ;)

Level1 Techs

1200 baud != 1200 bps

loved this video. keep it up wendell!

the 'scope I got in Taiwan. I think it's the seeed studio one, or a good clone of it. Came with two probes.

What a great project! I ran a bbs, it was a great way to connect to local geeks. This really does bring back some memories. Internet on a modem was basically my dos command prompt (no windows yet) machine connecting to a unix shell computer that had inet access. Lynx was the browser. Finger, gopher, ftp, telnet (weather, BBS's, usenet, and time), etc where my inet experience. So fun! Did anyone ever play The Pit (text based PvP)?

Hi, which oscilloscope are you using during the build? Thanks.

almost forgot for musical nostalgia check www.hitsquad.com they have amiga and .mod players and editors. i like what you have done with this modem

nostalgia is not that bad you can enjoy a part off it. having the different modem sound is great.

Maybe its the nostalgia or something else. But time machine is better than a puppet. With a time machine we can go back and kill the puppet when it inevitably becomes sentient and decides to rid earth of its creators.
