2019-03-08 19:30:24 +0000 UTCI roll a Poweredge R510 with an MD1200 total cost for the two empty with trays was like $700 add in the drives & it will get nasty but 26 disks worth of storage on unraid is worth the 23 a month I pay in extra electricity usage.
2019-03-07 15:45:08 +0000 UTCPricing this out for me the unit and drives came to £2507. My FreeNAS with an 8 core atom, PSU, case and 16GB of ECC RAM came to £745 with no disks. Assuming I used the disks in the video it would have come to £2479. Of course I had to build it myself but I got twice the CPU and four times the RAM. Of course some folks won't want the hassle of rolling your own. You pays your money and makes your choice I guess.

2019-03-06 21:49:17 +0000 UTCGlad the synology behaved well for you. However, you cannot assume that everything behaves like the linux desktop just because a system runs linux on x86. At work, we've got an older Qnap NAS - it has some really funky quirks, like SMART testing using a bunch of host CPU cycles and using busybox for many command line tools.
