The Gen That Was - 2013

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-Ci9j2IL7A

Welcome to The Gen That Was!

The show will take a look back on the PS4 and Xbox One on a year by year basis, with each episode covering a specific year. For the first episode, we'll be covering the 2013 launch year. Episodes will be split into three parts. In the first part, we'll provide a snapshot of events which give context for that particular year. In the second part, I'll select five games for the panel to talk about in greater detail. And in the third part, we'll actually play one of those five games, challenging our memories of it.

For all episodes after the first one, they'll be made available one week early for $1+ patrons and then released publicly. Right now, we plan on producing episodes on a biweekly basis in order to accommodate both the show as well as next-gen coverage and major reviews coming up.

I hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane as we quickly approach the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

L&R,

Ben

The Gen That Was - 2013

Comments

For the Year 2014 I don't want much, just a mention of Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition. It may also serve as a conversation starter for the "Definitive Edition" trend during that time. L&R.

Love the concept of the episode, I only kinda wish this had been done for like almost any other generation. I think this was probably the least generation because of how hard Nintendo’s Wii U flopped and Xbox shot themselves in the foot with that E3, the price AND lack of exclusives.

Audio version please? :)

This is great, Allies! I noticed some editing during the discussions presumably for the sake of pacing, and I like it! Very snappy and fun presentation, you kept me engaged the whole time.

MrMattatee

I really like the episode but for the life of me I don't understand the comparison of games, Dead Risings color tone seems not relevant to talking about Knack, Dark Souls and Demon Souls is alot of dark tones and you guys love those games. Also when the majority of the group agrees a game is bad it shouldn't be featured at the end.

I loved this video so much!

What a fantastic first episode! It feels so comprehensive even though there's no way to fully cram a year into an hour or so, but wow, you really get taken back to such a specific time period. So excited for the next episode!

Kate Bishop

Wow. This is one of my favorite series you guys have done. I'm blown away. I love looking back on past games, I don't think that happens enough. I can't wait to watch more if these.

Tyler Travis

REALLY awesome format! Love the memories culminating in a KNACK playthrough that had Huber DEHYPING! lol SOlid gold!

Raven Perez

It was easy to miss, but Ben said it was to keep it more focused on Xbox and Sony what with their new consoles coming very soon.

Raven Perez

I would have gladly watched a 5 hour episode on each year. Even if it rambles.

Daryl Rodriguez

This was a blast, looking forward to next episodes. Good job everyone!

This show was such a joy. <3

Shane Krug

Honestly, I was engaged watching this the whole time. This is good content and I want so much more of this in my life. This is what I've been wanting from you guys. Thanks for sharing.

I appreciated Ben gave Xbox some credit for Killer Instinct. This is a tendency for people to remember the bad things from the early Xbox One days. But not all was bad and credit where credit is due.

Casper Andersen

Really loved this show! Just great discussion. I especially liked how Ben focused the conversation on 5 specific games. Huber is right though Knack is a jolly lowstakes game! Knack 1 is a 6/10 Knack 2 is a swimming in 7's

Casper Andersen

This turned out really well. I liked that the structure wasn't just a podcast news retrospective. Having the 3 segments made the time fly by. Looking forward to the 2014 episode!

Greg Kettering

Petition to rename Huber Syndrome into Huber's Easy-breeze variety show.

Alexander Lopatin

I love everything about this!

Alexander Lopatin

Great show guys. Thoroughly enjoyed the trip down nostalgia lane.

Diggles

This was awesome, passionate talk with great energy. Great editing, too, so the conversation never stops. Thank you!

Is there a new rss feed or something? My podcast feed hasnt had an update since 1 of october.

It's a good show! But I think it's a missed opportunity to have had your videos up side-by-side with the gameplay -- that was really nice to have during The Five section. I'm assuming you couldn't because video wasn't recorded or some other editing reason, but I think it would be great for future episodes!

kbhomes

Any reason that the Wii U is excluded?

Andrew Chalmers

I greatly enjoyed this, because it's like if Retros were SUPER laid back. Being a games history nerd, I love content like this where it not only looks at a selection of the games, but also the context of what was going on, and that isn't an aspect that is really focused on as much because most conversations typically only discuss games only, so I appreciate the effort that goes into this. Understandably a short life with the limited amount of years to work with, I'm looking forward to the Allies' perspective revolving around what is considered the worst year of the gen for the next episode. If I had to give one critique, I'm not really into the opening package, but since that's a creative decision, it doesn't matter what I think and it's a minor thing compared to the following 99% of the video. So, as I said after the videos on Luminous Productions and Final Fantasy XIV: Yes. This. Love this. More of this please.

Brandon K Gann

Wow, this was awesome! Really enjoyable listen. Great job Ben and the crew!

I absolutely love this show, and it's so perfect. It's what I love about the Allies; from the back and forths about Knack, the memorable cold blooded lines from Blodworth, the discussions about what went wrong and what went right. It's evident a lot of work and research went into creating and producing the show and I really appreciate that.

Varun Kachhwaha

This is awesome, really great idea for a new miniseries

Lots of research by Ben!

Currently in the middle of watching this and really enjoying it! Great job, Ben!! Looking forward to the rest.

Hydelsius

I love this. This is such a good idea for a show to chill to

This was way meatier and ambitious than I was expecting. Well done, Ben. Looking forward to the rest of them.

Asbo Zappruder

Big shoutout to the allies for this one. I've been desperately hoping for some more actual game discussion content and this is such a good idea to fill that need while not repeating discussions about recent releases. Also a good way to show off your team's vast knowledge of video game history which I'm always impressed by. KUDOS

NotJack

Have you tried closing your eyes?

Cathal Fallon

Love it. Only watched 15min so far but it's already super interesting!

Olf Himself

Love the premise. Will it go up as audio only? I think free video after a week and patron only audio would be a nice incentive.

Trevor Lewis

Any chance we can get an audio only version for us commuters?

A very fun idea guys.. I love looking back at past games, as it reminds me why I enjoyed them so much... so I really think this is great. (Even in its launch year of the PS4, the Playstation killed it, officially stating it's dominance as the definitive gaming company & gaming platform)

Tegan Combatti

LOVE the intro
