I distinctly remember telling a couple of friends Yakuza: Like a Dragon was my favourite Dragon Quest game. Partly to get a rise, but it was also true, I liked it more than any of the Dragon Quest games I've played, hahaha.

I think the fact Yakuza 7 was a turn based RPG was absolutely the reason it exploded in popularity. I was never interested in Yakuza before I heard LAD was going to be a JRPG. That is what got me interested. I have 3 real-life friends who also got into it because it is an RPG, set in a modern setting (which is rare for the genre). This is anecdotal of course, but I'd be willing to bet the four of us are not the only ones. Not to say the fact that Yakuza has had a loyal fanbase singing its praises for years, or that this one was a soft reboot, or that it was available on a next-gen system at launch didn't play any sort of factor. But I truly believe those were more minor contributors to LAD's success than the change in genre.
