There are only 6 questions in today’s episode, but 4 of those are Takeaways! Not meaning I’ve decided they deserve attention, but rather that Patron asked something very specific of us. Something we can take action on immediately if we’re able and willing as a group. It’s like we’re all in the boardroom at the end of a fiscal year surrounding a really, really, really big table with 7,000+ chairs. I’m looking forward to wrapping up our GOTYs and then asking the big questions about 2022. The landscape has changed so drastically in the last 24 months that there’s no way to predict what everyone will get excited about. Shows! Goals! (?) Events! Lots to talk about. Lots to do.

DISCLAIMER: I take questions from the post comments on the previous week’s episode here on Patreon. You can ask a business-related question which I may answer live, or a personal question which I may answer below. If your business question was not answered live, I either replied to it in the comments, or referenced the answer in a recent episode. Feel free to inquire why your question wasn't included, or ask the same question a second time if you think I may have missed it. I will edit your comment/question before reading it live to ensure the show moves as quickly as possible. I typically grab all the questions by midnight (PT) the night before each episode.
Right after I asked that question, I saw you use it in a way that justified the ability. Players are moving so fast that taking the time for Kate Bishop to use her ability doesn't make sense, but the way you demonstrated it in Apex did. So, thanks! - Jones

Heya Jones,
Well, sure, when you look at it that way. But why would they? But when Easy Allies needs a little Christmas, do they need candles in the window, carols at the spinet, or simply to put up the brightest string of lights they've ever seen?

Hope you are well Jones. I've noticed an issue with the Podcast audio file. Recently, my phone's media player doesn't recognise the file as an audio file, so I have to play it by accessing my download folder, select the file and have it register it as an audio file. It doesn't happen for the other audio recordings for some reason, so Frame Trap, Friend Code and Reaction Shots play just fine.

Hi Jones! Does Tales of Arise's win at TGAs impact your decision to play it? You said you thought something like SMT 5 was more important, but clearly Tales has some love.

Hi Brandon,
Wishing you and the team a happy holidays.
Over the last year I decided to re-listen to every episode of the Easy Allies Podcast. It was really fun being able to listen to you all and even though the podcast is very "current news" heavy, I enjoyed hearing your opinions and predictions, and then seeing how they lined up with our current reality.
It was also fun listening to you grow as a podcast host taking over for Kyle. While you will never replace him (nor do I think you want to), you have done a great job adapting the podcast to your strengths, and I really enjoy the flavour that you bring to the table.
Ok, on to my takeaway for you to consider. I have some opinions on the episode sign-off tags (is that what they are called? It's the quotes you throw in at the end of each episode) that you have been using as of late.
At the start of the podcast, either you were not including sign-off or would use one and update it every 5-10 episodes. This was fine.
As the episodes went on you then ended each episode with a new quote from that show. A huge improvement, and a fun surprise to hear what was chosen at then end.
But as of recently, each episode is ending with 2-4 quotes rapid firing one after another. I think that this is taking away from the fun and impact of these sign-off tags. While I know that there are so many fun things that are said each episode, I would like to challenge and encourage you bring it down to a single one.
A single quote that is funny, or your feel encompasses what that episode is about will bring the episode to a satisfying close, and we the listeners can look forward to hearing what you consider to be the absolute best quote from that episode.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I am wishing you and your family the best this Christmas!

Hello Brandon.
This isn’t a Cup of Jones question, I just thought it would be a good place to answer question you’ve asked while reading my last Community Showcase submission.
You were curious how Wraith’s placing portal ability works in Apex Legends considering that no one uses Kate Bishop’s similar ability in Marvel’s Avengers. I’m not familiar with Avengers’ version, but in Apex Legends Wraith’s portals is much more a tactical ability than a traversal ability (although it can be useful if you your teammates are behind, and you want them to catch up). If enemy pins your team at a bad spot, you can place portal there, use your other ability to jump into the Void and become invulnerable, run towards safer place and place other portal there to help your teammates escape. If you took higher ground and killed enemy below, you can place portal, jump down, place another portal, loot enemy’s corpse and then use portals to quickly get back up.
Also, as most abilities in Apex Legends, it can be used creatively for unintended purposes. One time an opponent’s Wraith sneaked up and placed a portal on me – I was immediately taken to the other side and before I’ve realized what’s going on her teammates killed me. Another time Wraith was chaotically running back and forth across the stairs while placing her portals. Since you repeat her movement at 5x speed while traversing though portals, it was extremely confusing – again this may be a neat trap for your opponents. Also, I saw others using portals to deny entrance – if you are in a building with multiple doors, you can link two of them with portals and no one will be able to enter from those sides.
So yeah, it’s not an ability that you spam or heavily rely on, but there are multiple situations when it’s extremely useful.

Or, I’d love to hear more about how that pre-GOTY meeting goes :) do people passionately champion a minority game and try to get people on board?

I was watching a four-person GOTY discussion between Alanah Pierce, Ralph from Skill Up, and a couple of YouTubers, and I was surprised by how few of them had played some of the most well regarded indies of the year e.g. Chicory (0/4), Sable (1/4), Death’s Door (2/4), and Inscryption (1/4). Those are some of my absolute top games of the year. I was wondering if the Allies have any method for making sure smaller games don’t fall between the cracks in this way.

As of my comment its at $29.999. ...I don't know exact figures, but several of the Allies have mentioned the "considerable boost" they get from Roosterteeth ad revenue. While we may never know how much exactly, their Twitch and Youtube viewerships have climbed as well, so I imagine their incomes have too. I know its a lot of work but creating in-between tiers would give more for the patrons to latch onto as their incomes fluctuate. Too many patrons have dropped from $25 down to $15 or down to $5 or from $5 down to $1. I personally would like more HIGHER tiers to encourage growth. To me, having nothing between $60 and $200 says "we don't think anyone would pay this much so why bother". I don't see any reason why not to have a $100 and $150 tier other than they didn't set it up that way in the beginning and there's too much involved to change it now. "Executive Producer"...get a slide at the end of each weekly podcast with all the names on it (like the ones for the last EZA podcast of the month but not read out loud)...would be super simple to actually do, but the setup in Patreon just to create the tier keeps them from doing it. I think Patreon itself is one of the big hurdles to their growth. But that's just mho based on the "no" answers we've gotten on requests just like this.

Hey Mr. Jones!
I know it’s always in flux (to the point it could rise before I even finish TYPING) but as I’m writing this, a concern of mine is now reality: The Patreon has now dipped below $30K. I know you’ve been on record that EZA is not in a “break the glass in case of emergency” mode, but as I’ve watched it months over months over months, it’s been steadily in decline for a long while. This leads me to: What’s the threshold for EZA to start to fundraise to bring the Patreon amount back up? I know EZA has been (relatively) steady with the number of Patrons (~7,000+), but with the funding slipping, would EZA have to pull back on certain shows/productions? And what about the studio? EZA reached a $50K goal to secure it, but now almost half of that monthly income is lost (mostly due to the Pandemic), and it’s making me uneasy if you all can’t keep it with falling Patreon funding. Any calming comments would be greatly appreciated, because while I don’t (and frankly should NEVER) know the financial allocation for things, it’s still worrying that the Patreon is not seeing any growth. Thanks for reading as always and have a wonderful rest of your day. Cheers!
QUESTION:
As I write this, the Patreon funding has now dipped below $30K. What’s the threshold for EZA to start to fundraise to bring the Patreon amount back up?
