This week I used a more heavily manga-style influence for a comic idea that was suggested to me by a friend and colleague who is also here at Patreon! So thank you to Kit Duplessie for this idea!

I looked up "Medieval Korean Armor" for this one featuring Juni. She is Korean-Japanese but identified primarily with her Korean side from her mother.

Here it is more cleaned up. Korea is interesting because it is right in the middle of between China on one side and Japan on the other, so it gets influences from both.

Now the more stylized art becomes evident with the addition of color. It's not 100% manga style, because manga and anime art styles frequently omit details like lips in order to speed up the production process of the art. In Korea, the art style is known as "manhua" or "manhwa" instead of "manga". The appearance of the art style is very similar to the Japanese version, but the stories tend to be structured differently.

The super-condensed and overly-simplified explanation is that Korean manhua will tend to be more focused on a team of heroes or protagonists, while Japanese manga will tend to be more focused on a single hero/protagonist, especially if there is a "chosen one" theme, which is more common there. This isn't a rule nor 100% universal, but more of a shorthand.
And the completed version! The armor I found was visually cool but was portrayed in artwork by an archer, with only a short sword for backup, but in this case Juni will be portrayed with a proper long sword. Maybe not historically accurate but the armor was (to me) visually interesting and could be done relatively quickly.
The rest of the page reveals the punchline so this is where it end for now. See you Friday!
