BOHICA Blues... by ROB LIEFELD!

Who is Rob Liefield? He was a big-name comic book artist from the 1990's. He worked for Marvel and was the creator behind Deadpool and Cable, and later left to form Image Comics where he rode a wave of popularity with a series called "Youngblood", a sort of X-Men style superhero team.

Liefeld has a controversial reputation for a variety of reasons, but one of the things about him that stood out to comics fans in the years following his wave of popularity was how someone with his drawing talent managed to score so big in the comics industry. He was known for a variety of quirks, including insanely disproportionate human figures, never drawing feet, and putting very little work into backgrounds.

I did a doodle once featuring Joe Rock as if Rob Liefeld had created him:

The pictures was inspired by the (in)famous Rob Liefeld version of Captain America, which has been something of a meme, with the face details inspired by more of his trademark over-rendering of lines on characters faces (really, everywhere):

Later, I decided that Juni couldn't be left out, and I had to do a Liefeld version of her, since his drawings of female characters were always so wild::

The image I used for Juni was inspired somewhat by this figure of a Liefeld female hero (my god what is happening to that poor woman's spine?) and added another Liefeld trademark, the impossibly huge super-awesome mega-cannon weapon:

The bizarre proportions of the human body he gave his characters make me look like Michelangelo.

Below is the process for the Juni Image. I lost the Joe Rock WIPs, but I still have the Juni ones:

So, yes, the twisted-all-the-way-around spine is standard and the impossible extremities stretch... it was all there, Gandalf, thousands of years ago...

I mean, this was a wild one to put together...

The "pouches everywhere" was also a trope of Liefeld's, and yes, her leg is supposed to just bend like that behind the row of pouches because, again, that was Liefeld. There was a whole website devoted to how awful his art was. Look up "Progressive Boink: Worst Rob Liefeld Drawings": https://www.progressiveboink.com/2012/4/21/2960508/worst-rob-liefeld-drawings

And that was it. If anything I've underplayed it. Check out the website mentioned for more if you want to see it. Rob Liefeld probably isn't a bad guy, but somehow, someway, he got paid a lot. Sometimes there is no justice in this world, I tell ya.

See you next week!
