2025-09-24 16:29:47 +0000 UTCJust my two cents on the phone question, as someone who went through middle and high school with a phone: I think that allowing children to have broad access to these devices during key years of brain development and socialization is going to have disastrous consequences that we can't even begin to understand now. It can't be stressed enough that there are millions of children that spend multiple hours a day imbibing content that essentially amounts to deranged gibberish. Back when I was a kid my parents didn't let me watch SpongeBob because of some vague study that purported to prove that it decreased intelligence in children. It caused a bit of a panic amongst parents at the time, and I understand why some people today reference it counter to arguments against phones. However, imagine an old man, 80 years old, watching SpongeBob. He might find it crude and idiotic, but would he understand it? Yes, assuming he speaks the English language, the narrative and form of the show should be completely legible to him. Now show him Skibidi Toilet, Tralalero Tralala, and John Pork. Show him the garbage slop that kids watch on their iPads. He wouldn't understand it because there is nothing to understand, it is symbol cleaved from meaning that holds value insofar as it provokes base, primitive sensory stimulation. We are poisoning the linguistic development of our children, degrading their future capacity for thought, and fostering an unprecedented sort of generational divide
