The reason a third of the country believes in chemtrails could be because they feel duped by the professional-managerial class, or symbolic capitalists in Al-Gharbi's writing. As Al-Gharbi tells it, the rising PMC told the working class, "Accept our authority. Acquiesce to our consolidation of power, and all of humanity will benefit from the wonders of science, education, and meritocratic opportunity." But then life got worse for the working class. In an especially provocative note in one of his essays, he cites economic research to the effect that the relative economic fortunes of the PMC and the working class are anti-correlated. I don't necessarily agree with any of this, but I am continually disappointed when the Left, such as it is, ignores its most trenchant critics and refuses to engage with the likes of Musa Al-Gharbi (who, despite being a social democrat himself, rejects the Marxist theory of class). Instead, driven by the dynamics of the attention economy, even our best public intellectuals seem to devote most of their energy to scoring cheap wins on the likes of Jim Breuer.
