The Wayhaven Chronicles—Update+ 30/August/2024

So, I totally forgot it was a bank holiday on Monday here in the UK, lol!

But it did actually get me thinking about public holidays in Wayhaven. One of the main ones being ‘Rooting Day’—which is the day that the group of people who saw the potential of Wayhaven decided to turn it into the community it is today.

You’d think it being called ‘Rooting Day’ would mean they planted a tree or something to honour it, but no, they laid the first stone at the Cornerstones! I kind of liked the irony in that, hehe. Thankfully, they only developed on the buildings already there and didn’t cut into the nature surrounding the town.

Anyway, apart from me reminiscing about lore for Wayhaven I came it with sooo many years ago, I also got a ton of editing and rewrites done! Though I did at one point rewrite a whole scene for Adam/Ava’s romance…only to realise it was supposed to be for Nate/Nat’s, lol! That was painful to get rid of! But I love what came out of the bones of that scene and sprung to life on rewriting!

I want to do a couple more playthroughs, just to check the new stuff doesn’t bring up any weird bugs or complications, then I’ll be sending it over the editor, which means I’ll be starting the next chapter tomorrow!

One of you awesome patrons did suggest an elegant solution for my conundrum over the randomisation of the unit for the Chapter 3 scene—having the first playthrough be randomised and then having it as a choice for subsequent playthroughs. Really clever and perfect solution!

So, I worked really hard on finding out how this could be achieved! I know in Ren’Py you can use like a ‘global’ or ‘persistent’ variable, I think, to make that work, but I just can’t find anything for Choicescript that would achieve it except changing the ending stuff and setting variables there, which I don’t think would work when it comes to publishing. Which is a real shame, as I think that would have worked! If I can’t find anything after another search, then I’ll be seeing what readers favour, either choice or random for that still.

If anyone has anyone thoughts on coding for this though, I’d be very grateful to learn!

Next week will be social media days before diving into the next chapter!! Social media days will take a while as it’s the Character Q&A on Patreon throughout this whole month, which starts on Sunday. Got some interesting questions I’m excited to answer for that, hehe! ;D

For Update+ this week, a snippet of dialogue with Maaka that made me chuckle…

"Thinking of Adam/Ava as the lead in some gothic romance, prancing about the moors in a flowing ghostly ensemble is…." The image makes me pause. Partly from the hilarity, but also partly that any thought of Adam/Ava makes my heart stutter. "It's kind of hilarious."

Maaka grins, barking out a laugh. "Bet he/she'd look good in a pair of tight leather pants though."

Regarding global variables, perhaps you could look into how achievements (which I know you don't use) are done. Some games have their achievements only pop up when newly earned, some each time its condition is triggered. To me this sounds like it should involve a similar system... But I can't say if achievements and the game code itself work the same way.

I'd definitely very much prefer choice. Sorry! But randomization would be nice as an option like between the captain and the mayor, where i can select if i want it random or not. But yeah, i very much prefer choice since i have so many different playthrus for different choices

I think A should add some leather pants to their wardrobe - though they may not find it as practical! Okay I have to know which A scene was actually an N scene!

I think A need to try on a pair of tight leather pants now. For science 👀 And yeah I think giving the choice for it to be random or a choice would be good! Plus then it would make it easy to get to see all the content with the different units on replays!

I would agree with some of the comments here and request making it a choice to either have randomization or have the ability to choose the team manually, if possible. That way, it would be easy for people to switch between the two as often as they want. For me, I could see myself coming back to this game after the first few playthroughs of switching from randomness to choice, then wanting another round of randomness when I revisit this book again after a few months.

There's one series I play that does a "new game+" via a password that they give when you complete the first story. It gives a statement boost but maybe your could do something similar to allow choosing the UB members

If the choicescript doesn’t have immediate solutions, maybe just put in the story to chose or randomize. That way it’s in there, kinda like the choice in book 3 with this flipping the coin for the Mayor or the Captain. We could chose or flip the coin and it randomizes the choice. Hopefully my suggestion makes sense. Looking forward to the next updates. 😁❤️

Could you grant an achievement on the first playthrough, and use the command to check achievements to see whether you should randomise the unit or show the choice?

May I suggest giving a choice in game whether the player wants it randomized or choose the team? I don't know how the coding works for that, but I know some IFs had choices like that (on top of my head, in Fallen Hero you can decide a gender for your two possible love interests, or have it picked by random).
