Spot the Difference

I'm genuinely not advertising for the Decimator plugin (It's expensive, wait for a sale if you get it) but I have found it genuinely life-changing, at least as far as working with big scenes.

Here's one of the Knight characters from my Elves vs Goblins set. From Right to Left, you can see the original, full-poly version, and then one at 75, 50 and 33%. It's really hard to spot the difference even in the foreground: There's a little loss of quality in the materials- especially in bump maps and reflections (look at their eyes). You can also see some straight edges and corners where there should be curves, and there's a strange dimple on the clavicle on the reduced-poly figs. For background detail though, it's fantastic. One of the biggest pains in my arse in a story is the background figures for a fight. In a large battle that you're trying to show in progress from different angles and perspectives, you can spend ages rendering figures behind the main focus point whose only purpose is to maintain that sense of scale and continuity. Having duplicates of main characters at much reduced poly count means I can pack in background detail ten or fifteen figures at a time instead of four or five, which saves an incredible ammount of time and effort!

Just bought Decimator. It is 82% off for Daz members. Thanks for the tip!

Blue Sienna

Oh, it takes care of the textures too? Guess I should use it more often instead of just compressing textures and convert figures to prop (which is taking loads of time already)

The eyes do immediately jump out, but in the background, they would look identical.
