Break due to family emergency
Added 2025-02-12 14:27:37 +0000 UTCHowdy folks,
I’m taking a break from work in the next couple of weeks or so. Me and Amy are currently staying at the hospital with our two-year old Leo who just got diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. He got sick Saturday from what we now know was diabetic ketoacidosis (no insulin -> cant break down sugars -> body breaks up fat -> releases acids into the bloodstream).
Leo’s a trooper and has recovered like a champ, now the focus is on getting his levels stable and learning how to handle his insulin going forward. We’ll be here for a week and then we have some time to come to grips with our new reality.
We are very well taken care of by the hospital staff and once we leave the hospital we’ll have the support of the diabetes team plus our amazing families.
So for now I’ll be taking a break from everything work related to focus on my family. Should be back in March but I’m keeping it flexible.
Stay excellent and tuned for comics when they arrive!

2025-02-13 16:33:29 +0000 UTCAs a fellow type 1, I wish him the best. Assuming they will have him on a pump will make it easier on you two as parents, the stuff to deal with diabetes has become monumental over the years. If they don't start him on a pump due to his age, you and mom will get to learn the old school method of dealing with type 1.

2025-02-13 05:32:51 +0000 UTCAs someone who also grew up with childhood medical problems, modern medicine has come so far in the last 30 years. There are so many conditions that aren't just "survivable," but "fixable and thrivable." Trust the science. Get a second opinion if your doctors aren't giving you the information you need. And remember kids bounce back fast. They'll be ok.

2025-02-12 15:32:44 +0000 UTCI join everyone in saying good on you for taking some time to work out what is best for your family. So glad your son is okay and you will find a way to best manage his levels so that it doesn’t impact him too intensely. Looking forward to when you return, but take as long as you need. Wishing you all the best!! X

2025-02-12 14:34:09 +0000 UTCFamily first. Diabetes (t2) was tough as getting an adult, I cannot imagine what you have to go through and say to Leo about what he gets to eat and why he has to get so many shots. Internet hugs from a stranger who likes your comics.
