New Marathon

The most exciting thing Bungie could do with Marathon 30 years later is returning to this part of the story for the sake of nostalgia and expanding the lore. The Cinematic Short gave us an amazing rendering of the 12km wide Marathon colony ship in orbit of Tau Ceti IV.

We also see the alien attack from the beginning of Marathon 1.

"The primary medium-range radio antenna has been disabled or destroyed, which makes communication extremely difficult. The only thing which seems clear is that the spaceport was obliterated by low-yield nuclear weapons minutes after the attack on the Marathon began. This I can verify through my own optical instruments." - Leela, Marathon (1994)

While the rest of the video was excellent, the Marathon attack sequence was amazing, albeit brief.

Respecting and winning-over the fans first-and-foremost creates a strong foundation for a sequel game. I saw the amazingly expansive world that Bungie built for Halo Reach in 2010 and we're now 15 years beyond that. To play on the colony side during the Pfhor attack would be amazing in modern graphics, but that's not what they did. Omitting a single player campaign and omitting availability for Mac still linger as poor management decisions. How poor management can destroy an otherwise good product or good idea will be explored in my next video.

It seems this Short may be all we get out of this project as scandals erupt and gameplay is reported as underwhelming. Quite a difference from the original game that caused so much excitement, anticipation and customer satisfaction. I just hope this doesn't sour Marathon's legacy.

It sounds like you were even more into Marathon than I was. Great to hear from another fan of the series. Obviously, I share your concerns about the new game. Even though a TauCeti4 based game was a great premise, the decisions they've made beyond that are not really what us fans want.

I grew up on Marathon as a kid, named a company inspired by it, heck at one point had pfhor inspired tattoos. Suffice to say I’ve got a fair bit emotionally invested in this new game. I’ll be honest, the trailers have me worried.
