I was having a conversation with a friend about patreon and came to the realization that I’m losing a bit of what this used to be and losing a bit of myself in the process. When I started patreon I was always struggling to get “professional quality content” so I would just post random selfies of geeky stuff I was doing. At the time I felt like this was a cop out and assumed people weren’t genuinely interested in it. Since then I’ve been trying to offer as much professional shots/finished products as I can, and I worry that I’m losing a bit of my geeky side.
Let’s face it, part of what I love about patreon is that it allows me to be myself and chase dreams I never thought I could. It’s a place where I get to be myself and not the Instagram manufactured version of myself. People want a little BTS magic, people want to get to know me, and I want to let people get to know me.
I can hear you saying “yes yes, ok, get on with it” so get on with it I shall!
From this point on I will be making every Wednesday a series I’m calling “What am I Wednesday” where I will dive into something geeky I’m currently into. What am I watching, what am I reading, what am I playing, and things like that.
This week I’d like to welcome you all to the Umbrella Academy! I was first introduced to this comic in about...2007 or so. The first issue was released as a “free comic book day” exclusive and when flipping through the options this was one that really stood out. My favourite type of art is typically quite simplistic in regards to both pencils ink and colors. When I saw this comic the art stood out to me because it lookedlike some of my favourite artists work. (Check our Mike Mignoa, Tim Sale or Darwin Cooke).
Although the story was amazing and the art was fantastic this comic didn’t end up staying with me. It wasn’t until about 4 or years later that I read the very first trade paperback. The only reason I did so is because my friend was a My Chemical Romance fan and forced me to do it. I like the comic but not enough to go out and buy any other volumes. Fast forward to today where I’ve watched the first two seasons of the show and have already blown through all three trades. It’s better than I could’ve imagined. It shares a lot In common with the TV show but it’s different enough to tell it sounds story. The art is still incredible the storytelling it’s absurd in a way that most comics aren’t. Somehow it all works. Anyway… This is the longest thing I’ve ever written in my life and I went to university for many years I’m gonna go now.
