The boy are back in town and it’s time for season two!!
This week I want to talk about the show the boys! Yes, yes, another TV show based off of comic book. But don’t worry because this time I haven’t actually read the comic before starting the show. Don’t get me wrong I’d love to read the comic but it’s literally one of the most expensive trade paperbacks I’ve ever seen and there are 12 volumes. Because of that I will simply be discussing the free show that I watch by stealing my roomates amazon prime!
Long story short, I fucking love it. It’s great. It is one of the most exciting shows I’ve watched in a long time, while also being one of the most challenging watches I’ve had in a long time. I genuinely feel like it gets to the heart of what America would truly be like if superheroes were real. Not only that, but it’s so great at dissecting MANY of the issues within today’s society.
I am going to offer a trigger warning here because some of the things I’m about to list off/talk about are...Well they are topics that deserve a trigger warning. I won’t be doing into detail just listing them.
The show deals with racism, sexism, sexual assault, war, drug abuse, femninism, political malfeasance, spousal abuse, depression, organized religion, self harm, negative aspects of social media, body dysmorphia, and a bunch of other difficult topics that would likey give Freud a huge hard on. The big thing for me is that I just can’t get over how the show is able to tackle all of these topics while still being both fun and funny. What’s even more impressive is that it doesn’t really mix the two. They are able to handle all of these uncomfortable topics, but never make any of it out to be a joke. That is truly what I love about this show. This show makes me feel uncomfortable And to me that’s the sign of a great show. Obviously I also really love it because it involves superheroes and I’m pretty much a sucker for anything with superheroes, but this show is different. The mixed emotions I get while watching are wild. DO I FEEL BAD FOR THE DEEP OR NOT???
I know I’m rambling and just kind of saying the same stuff over and over again but I don’t really have much more to say about this show other than it’s great. Have I said that 5 times yet, I’m contractually obligated.
I binged the first season in one day so I’m actually pretty glad that they’re releasing episodes weekly rather than all at once. It’s allowed me to actually enjoy the show and think about each episode individually. You know rather than watching 7 hours and trying to dissect a whole season? It’s how tv is meant to be watched! Am I old? Don’t answer that!
OK that’s all I’m gonna say for now because honestly it’s been too much already but yeah, great show. Great show.
