“What I’m” Wednesday: HALOWEEN MOVIES!

This week I want to talk about what I’m watching. And because it’s October you know damn well that all I’m watching is Halloween shit. Normally in October I like to watch Halloween movies or horror movies pretty frequently. I tend to go back to my old faithful‘s like Hocus Pocus, the nightmare before Christmas, Halloween, the Addams family, and a Bunch more. On top of that every year I try and have a theme for what I’m watching. Last year it was horror icons, so I watched all the nightmare on Elm Street, all the Halloween‘s, all the Friday the 13th, and a random spattering of others such as Texas chainsaw, hell raiser, scream, and evil dead.

This year I wanted to do something a little different. This year I wanted to watch only movies I had never seen before. I thought this would be a difficult task because I’ve seen a lot of Halloween movies and quite a few horror movies. Turns out I’m an absolute fucking poser. There are so many movies I haven’t seen, so in addition to only watching new movies I told myself that I would also watch at least one a day for all 31 days of October.

To narrow the list down a little bit I’m trying to stick to more Halloween centric movies. What I mean by that is that I’m not just going for horror films. To me horror films aren’t the same as Halloween films. That’s not to say that all the films I’m going to watch will involve the holiday Halloween, but that I want them to focus more on the spooky. or dead ass just be kids Halloween movies which is how it’s been playing out so far.

For example here’s the list of the movies I’ve watched thus far: The animated Addams family, haunted mansion, corpse bride, The craft, hotel Transylvania, practical Magick, monster house, and Coraline. See I told you I was a fucking poser. So yeah that’s what I’ve been doing. Sometimes I watch part of it while I’m working and the rest at night, sometimes I’ll watch two in one day, and sometimes I don’t have time for any. But hey we’re getting through it.

oh, and if you’re wondering, I loved the corpse bride and Hotel Transylvania, I enjoyed the Addams family and Coraline, the craft in haunted Mansion we’re pretty good, but I wasn’t a big fan of monster house or practical Magic.

But now I’m curious what your Halloween movie traditions are, or what you would recommend that I watch. Keeping in mind that you have absolutely no idea what I’ve watched before. But I mean like… I’m a fucking poser so there’s a pretty good chance I’ve never seen whatever it is you recommend!

Original Invasion of the Body Snatchers! Although I’m going to watch Arsenic and Old Lace again now that it’s been mentioned. Is no one on this list going to ask to see the rest of Michael’s costume from this post?? Red leather and wings!

Peter

I usually like to do a run of the REC movies (at least 1, 2 and 4), House 1 + 2 for some cheesy 80’s horror-comedy and maybe a Re-Animator for good measure

Pumba

Aside from The Rocky Horror Picture Show which I watch every Halloween night (and occasionally The Witches or Hocus Pocus), my favorite horror movie to put on for background noise is Event Horizon.

Josh Draper

The original twos are the best. What I mean by that is the original Halloween 1&2, Hellraiser 1&2, A Nightmare on Elm St 1&2 and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1&2. Any one pair is great for a double feature night. Also I just watched an incredible horror film called Porno which is, I promise, not an actual porno. It's just a hilarious horror comedy.

PJ Carambia

ParaNorman is a fun and beautifully crafted movie. Or the terrible gay movie Hellbent.

Trent Scherer

I always try to watch Trick 'R Treat. So good. Shaun of the Dead. Dog Soldiers(werewolves). You're Next. The Faculty (alien body snatcher type horror). Man there are so many to list

Jose Diaz

Trick 'r Treat is an annual watch....its fantastic!

Nick Brown

Hocus Pocus is the go to day of Halloween

Jeremy C

Not a movie but I would always recommend the hallowe’en episodes of Buffy

David Jenkins

Check Satan’s Little Helper, you won’t regret it!

Elliot Ibáñez

I’ve been watching Halloween movies too. I watched Hocus Pocus and Casper (which I hadn’t seen in years), as well as a new one for me - the Witches of Eastwick (not great). Soon I’ll watch some of my anytime favourites like Coraline & Beetlejuice. I’m also watching the new season of the Worst Witch lol. I was thinking of checking out Dark Shadows - hopefully it’s not too bad.

SJ Chariot

I f’ing LOVE Hocus Pocus, watching it every time it’s on TV. Don’t really have any recommendations though, Halloween isn’t a huge thing yet in my country (it’s getting bigger every year but nothing compared to the US)

Rick Kramer

My favorite: Trick ‘R Treat. Any of the big franchises: Evil Dead, Scream, Child’s Play, Final Destination, Halloween, etc. High art horror: Suspiria, The VVitch, Hereditary. Modern-day twists on the classics: You’re Next, Cabin in the Woods, Happy Death Day

Alex

You can get really good cosplay ideas from American horror story

Lucas Paiva

I LOVE The Craft, but after watching The Mentalist for years I do have a soft spot for Robin Tunney. Watched Beetlejuice at the weekend for the first time in years!

Adam Jarvis

If you’re looking for something to mix it up between horror films, Arsenic and Old Lace is a personal October favorite. Technically it’s set on Halloween...

Greyson

Practical Magic was more of a love story than anything, although the midnight margarita party was fun. For campy laughs, I HIGHLY recommend Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. I watch it every year at this time.

Kent Babb

I’m surprised you just saw coraline! or practical magic! but that’s fun! i could probably tell you about some movies when we talk =p
