“What I’m Wednesday” The boys! The comic!

It’s with a heavy heart that this Wednesday I tell you about how bad “The Boys” comic is. If you recall, I did a “what im Wednesday” a few weeks ago about “The Boys” tv show. I pretty much gushed about how perfect the show is and how it take risks and really captures the nuance of the superhero genre. Comparatively, the comic couldn’t be any further from doing that.

The reason I’m writing this is because in my last post about the boys I talked about how much I wanted to read the comics but they were too expensive. At this point I’ve read 20/77 issues and its an absolute bore. It should be noted that these are just my opinions, and if you really like the comic, that’s incredible and I’m very jealous. I think my problem is that I’m reading it after seeing the show and I’m comparing. That said, I did this with umbrella academy and I liked the comic more than the show.

So anyway, my complaints are pretty petty so I won’t bog you down with them. First of all Hugie isn’t hot in the comic and I’m obsessed with him in the show. To be fair, maybe this isn’t a petty criticism because I have an issue with all of the art. It works well with the gore to make it feel more visceral, but I hate the way people are drawn. NO ONE IS SEXY!! My other major issue (and don’t @ me, I already know how dumb this is going to sound) is that the comic is REALLY about the boys. I’ve read more than 1/4 of the series and I’ve seen the superheroes like 3 times. The comic doesn’t focus on the seven much and it’s all about the butcher and his team. Like I said, I know that sounds silly because of the tittle, but I though it would involve more supes.

I’ve stopped reading for now and moved back to marvel because reading the chits aha started to become a bit of a chore. If you’ve read it all and it get better, please let me know! I’d love to enjoy it but sadly the shows kind of ruined it.

And if talking about cuties I am all about Frenchie ;)

The comic book made a lot of sense at the time when it started. It was different and rough. The TV show is however a masterpiece on its own. And very current and relevant.

I haven't watched the show, mainly because I was traumatized by the comic, (which I own every issue of) and really don't think I could stomach a live action version. I was raised in a BornAgain Christian household, and when we got to 'The Capes for Christ' arc, it all got a little too real.

As you say, everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion, and i certainly respect yours Michael. However, must give mine on one point you mentioned. Saying that the show takes risks, and the comic couldn't be further from that is a bit much. Consider the terrorist hijacking scene... the show sets the scene on just some anywhere anywhen airliner. The comic had it on one of the 9/11 planes. Five years after that tragic event. *That's* ballsy to do that, then. I also felt that Hughie's girlfriend's death was *way* more horrific, way more tragic, in the comic. I totally understand why the show toned a lot of things down though! You can get away with a lot more in print that you can in live action! (especially Starlight's "welcome to the Seven" scene) That being said, i'm glad you're enjoying the show Michael... i'm looking forward to Season 2 myself <3

Well that’s a rarity, the tv adaption being better than the book. I loved the show! Love me some Karl Urban as Billy Butcher, but they’re all amazing in that show!

You may like Squadron Supreme or Astro City much more. Good luck waiting for the next season of the series. :)

I read the comics when they came out but haven’t really watched the show. The Boys are the main focus of the book but the heroes do make appearances. You really get a spotlight on them in the Herogasm mini-series. It’s a really dark book and the majority of heroes in the comic is really awful. You should probably consider both the book and TV show as two separate things since they are extremely different.

Same. I love the show and have wanted to read the comics but I don't want to shell out so much money on them. I was also concerned about the artwork. :\ For me, the Deep is the hottest. ;)

Can’t say I have read any of them at all. I enjoyed the show and at this point I will probably just stay away from the comics. No big loss I have all the Power Rangers to read and I started my WitchBlade and The Darkness series over again. Do what makes you happy! 😊👍🏼

I've been postponing the show SOOO much! Gotta sit my ass down and watch it sometime... Always been interested in it! Have no idea about the comics, though x)
