“What I’m” Wednesday: Buffy!

For this “what I’m Wednesday” I want to talk about my most current TV show binge: Buffy the Vampire slayer.

Two months ago I decided I wanted to do a re watch of buffy because I hadn’t done a full series re-watched it in almost 12 years. I’ve always considered myself a buffy fan but I was talking to someone about the show and realized that I really didn’t remember many details. It kind of drove me crazy so I decided to start it from the beginning.

When I watched the whole thing 12 years ago I didn’t finish season 7 because  I was too sad to admit that it was over. To this day, I STILL don’t know how buffy ends. That said, I will build up the courage to watch the final episodes on this watch through

I’ve also decided to add Angel to the mix because I’ve only seen season one and I’ve heard from more than a few people that is it “as good or better” than buffy. (So far I’m still team Buffy).

I won’t go on and on in this post about how good it is because I shouldn’t have too. What I will say is that I’m genuinely surprised how well it holds up in regards to humour, acting, story telling, and over all quality. Just keep in mind that it is a product of the 90’s so the languages used and some themes feel/are pretty problematic. I assumed this re-watch was just going to feel nostalgic, but I was blown away with how invested I was. It been a long time since I’ve cried watching a show and this show did it.

The only other thing I want to touch on is the elephant in the room named Joss Whedon. I’m incredibly disappointed in all the things I’ve heard about him (both publicly and from friends who have worked with him) and in my opinion he’s a pretentious asshole. I say this knowing that’s he’s made some of my favourite things in the entire world. He’s made one of my favourite horror movies (Cabin in the woods), one of my favourite movies (The Avengers), one of my favourite comic book series (Astonishing X-men), and one of my favourite tv shows (Buffy). I have a hard time coming to terms with that sometimes but I’m not going to punish all the other incredibly talented people who worked on those projects. Joss would be nothing with out his writers, actors, artist, and so many other people. Because of that, whenever I choose to engage in his content I choose to celebrate those people.

Ok, just gotta hop off my soap box here…

Comments

I love both Buffy and Angel and although they both do have their problems, mostly due to their time and the creator, the are both amazing. A really good podcast that that is also going through the series, they are currently about halfway through season 7, is Buffering the Vampire Slayer
