“Qiu sheepishly offered the light to the new people in charge. Mrs. Baumann took it.”

mrs_b “Now, go get comfortable on the pillows. If you’re going to be exhausted and miserable, you don’t also need to strain your back.”

“She waved her brand-new light around, giving a visual guideline to her directions. Her other hand was placed against the couch’s armrest.”

“Mrs. Baumann creakily lowered herself onto the mattress- her and the bed cracked at the joints.”

“You, Qiu, and Tamarack lined up along the headboard.”

-“You settled into the corner closest to [granny].”:

-“You got comfy right in the middle.”:

-“You went to the farthest away corner.”:

“Tamarack snuggled [in the spot nearest to her grandma/in the middle], squishing against her pillow as if she needed to fight against it floating away.” 

“Qiu was [the boy in the middle/on the opposite end]. He placed his hands over his chest politely.”

“Delicately, Mrs. Baumann pulled the quilt back and placed it over the three of you. If you were gonna be exhausted and miserable you didn’t also have to be cold.”

“She smoothed the wrinkles out of the blanket around you. Crinkles appeared on her face from her smile.”

mrs_b “Opa?”

“[Granny] did not have to say more or even turn her head. The tone of the word was enough. Where was he? And why wasn’t he joining already?”

“He sat beside her. The bed sunk in under their added weight. [It made you shift to laying half on your side/It shifted Tamarack onto her side.]” #if closest corner or not

mrs_b “How about a story, Ernst?”

“A story? From Mr. Baumann? [He usually said three whole words, and that was when he stuck around to begin with./He usually said three whole words, not unless things were a total disaster. Was this an emergency situation?]” #if not fancy fun tea party or got it

“Qiu’s raised brows showed you weren’t the only one questioning it. Mrs. Baumann noticed you kids didn’t quite believe her.”

mrs_b “Oh yes, Mr. Baumann’s voice is much better for bedtime stories than mine. Besides, I think you’ll like what he has to share.”

“Four gazes moved to the same point. The man with a storyteller’s voice ran a hand down his worn face.”

mr_b “Alright.”
