Oluv’s audiophile collection #39

I am currently so busy that I nearly forget it’s already Wednesday and time for new music to listen to, I hope you find something enjoyable, unfortunately 2 tracks are missing from Spotify:

I appreciate your comprehensive response and empathize with your frustrations as these unit inconsistencies have completely thrown a wrench in this project. The vast improvement in sound from your reference (6000hz) tuning has completely captivated my interest in chasing "correct/optimum/neutral" sound, as well as learning to use parametric EQ. I have a few questions about getting started (I will be using Equalizer APO/Peace). My first question is: do I need to create a blank canvas and "zero out" the EFFP2 before I start messing around with an external equalizer? How exactly do I go about it on the Airoha app? I know you have addressed this in a previous comment, but it was a little unclear. If you don't zero them out, is it basically just adding on to the existing EQ profile, in my case the reference 6000hz tuning? Also when you measured the unit inconsistencies, were you measuring them out of the box with their stock tuning or did you calibrate first? If you can shed some light about getting started with the EQ process it would be much appreciated. Thanks again.

Actually I optimised the reference tuning continuously for myself and I continue to get it even closer to that “optimum” but I doesn’t make quite sense to release these “improvements” as additional tunings because the actual changes may appear minimal on the one side but on the other side are screwed up with the sample variation, because basically every unit will sound different anyhow. In the beginning all the units I used for reference sounded all alike to some sensible degree at least but all units I purchased recently sound quite different especially in the treble area which is the most sensitive one for getting the entire timbre correct. Therefore my plan would rather be to continue to approach that optimum more and more to get an even smoother and more realistic or let’s call it “correct” spectrum, which should be transferable over to other units as well, just trying to achieve the same response. This would imply though, that I need to work with the particular unit directly and can then offer you a finished unit optimised for this particular sample and transposed over to someone’s ear canal resonance but this doesn’t mean that this will still sound “the same” to you or even if it’s the same it still doesn’t mean it will sound “correct” to your ear. This is the experience I made in the meantime. Although many seem to get decent results with my tuning, I am pretty sure it could be optimised even more but not by me as I simply cannot verify the final result one wil l be getting with my own ear. There are so many factors that it’s actually shocking how different all headphones sound while in reality they should all sound exactly the same to sound “right”. It’s quite frustrating actually. Good thing is that you will be satisfied with your particular result as long as you didn’t hear something better or let’s call it “closer” to that optimum, then this will be your new reference. My hope is that I can somehow collaborate on the successor of the Free Pro 2 together with Earfun which would also require an own app from my side which not only lets you select between all tunings comfortably but also offer you further options for additional optimisations necessary towards your ear. It will come down if Earfun is interested in such a kind of collaboration. Their goal is definitely not to make the most perfect sounding IEM but to sell as many as possible with so little costs and effort as necessary. Therefore my “ideas” are not their priorities…

Hey Oluv. Just curious are you still working on tunings for the EFFP2 or have we pretty much wrapped it up with the reference tuning? Thanks for all your time and effort🙏🏼
