Atrocities are committed in every war by all sides to one degree or another. In WWII, as Germany initiated the Blitz, they can't cry "foul," nor can Japan, who initiated atrocities on civilian populations as well. It's a tragic consequence of war as demonstrated in current conflicts as well as historical ones. If you don't want war visited on your civilian population, don't visit it on other's. If you do, you may "reap what you sow."

However the argument can be made that the war needed to be taken to the German populace in order for them to truly understand the pain which their country inflicted on millions of Jews, Poles, and Russians. This is the cost of war.
