The Few (10) Expansions I Actually Like (Exclusive)

Patrons! It's time for your monthly dose of exclusivity. Thanks to the Voter LOLs patrons, I'm talking about the few expansions I actually like. It's not the most positive video I've ever made!

Expect the main channel video early this week (tomorrow, hopefully!).

Actually yours,

Jon

The Few (10) Expansions I Actually Like (Exclusive)

How about expansions to Dixit? I feel they're just net positive, but I also would definitely recommend people against buying them before they get "bored" of the base cards

I had no idea Extra Salt existed! I gifted SSP to my cousin for her birthday, and we played it a bunch. Every 5 minutes I made the joke "they should add a crab king to this game", and I can't believe they actually did. I'm buying this immediately 🤠

About the Secrets and Lies expansion for Mysterium, you’re not adding a 4th thing to guess. If you play with the Scenario cards, they replace the Objects to add even more variety.

Mexico offers a couple really tight double corners that force careful play as you’ll either waste turns trundling slowly through them or take double the heat for blowing past too quickly, while Japan has some flooded sections of track that penalize you with extra heat for downshifting while you’re in them (and these are of course placed in areas where you’ll want to downshift). They manage to feel distinct enough from the base game tracks, but also don’t add so much complexity (or any additional fussy components) that there’s any obstacles to stop you from picking them.

I haven't had a chance yet. Do the tracks offer anything strikingly different?

I’m curious if you’ve played the Heavy Rain expansion for Heat since I know you’ve mentioned enjoying that game! I don’t find the 7th player added useful personally, since I don’t have anywhere near that many friends, but I feel like the extra tracks are an excellent addition.

Exactly this, but about the Seafarers for Catan. Ever since we have bought it, we have been playing the "uncharted islands" scenario. It gives you civilization-like vibes of discovering new lands. The only expansion ever I've kept and recommend. ⛵ 🏝️

One of the only expansions I ever liked was Cities and Knights for Catan. It led me to find the original game too boring and without enough agency to play and have fun.

Peter Freese

While watching this video, I realized I don't actually enjoy most of the expansions I've bought and I should quit buying them lol. Jon, I guess you're a de-influencer now! But I have the same exception as the previous commenter - I will always get the Button Shy expansions because they're consistently good and inexpensive. :)

One again, first rate! I tend to avoid getting expansions until I’ve played a game enough to to consider them - with one exceptions. With Buttonshy games I’ll often get the expansion-particularly if it has a solo option. Then again, I really enjoy the Buttonshy offerings!
