"He was a hothouse flower to my outdoorsman"... A hothouse flower can only grow indoors, & in very specific conditions like in a greenhouse. Whereas she was an outdoorsman, wanting to be outside. It's a poetic way of saying he was a depressed introvert & she was an extroverted public figure.
