He unfortunately went out like a punk and died off panel after 17 told him he wasn't even using half of his power previously. Gohan even told Trunks that he thought wearing his father's clothes would make him stronger, but its not that easy. People take this line to imply that manga Gohan wasn't even as strong as Goku returning home. Also, Vegeta honestly didn't do too badly. But it is a one sided fight, as 18 is stronger, but she also has infinite stamina. Also, 17 initially thought the rest of the crew were around Vegeta's level, so he was concerned that if they gang banged 18, she could lose. And in all honesty, 5 Vegetas would be a real problem for her, as even 1 Vegeta certainly isn't one shot fodder for her. Trunks is the closest to him in power and he's marginally weaker. People usually put the chain as Vegeta >= Goku >= Trunks > Piccolo.
