It only affects the timeline if another person joins that other universe. I just don't look at timelines like timelines anymore, just more like a different universe.

Trunks in another future timeline died to the cell of his timeline who now terrorizes the current present. I think this is where the actual continuity is now weird since we have no idea if the trunks from another future timeline was ours or another. We also have no idea if the current present is the same one we saw a few episodes back.

Even though Cell was just playing, he still has to worry about Piccolo. Vegeta and Goku thought the same thing. They're battle geniuses, with Goku being a master martial artist, able to fight above his level, whereas Vegeta simply exterminated those beneath him. Still, it was more than Trunks' rookie ass, since he didn't even comprehend anything beyond Super Saiyan. Goku really has that out of box thinking (well, combat wise) that serves him so well in this saga. No offense to Geets or Trunks though.
