Another great choice. It was a fun contrast to their feelings at the end.

2025-07-11 18:56:39 +0000 UTCAlthough I liked Jesse from the time his character was introduced, I think I have come to appreciate more what a truly great guy he was every time I re-read. That's one of the things that I enjoy about reading it again - the appreciation I gain for just how well-written the characters outside the main group are. And the part you mention occurring about after Josh's almost suicide is proof of that as well.

2025-07-11 18:04:11 +0000 UTCI recently reread the chapter immediately after Josh's almost suicide to be reminded of how it was hitting Danny and the way Jesse handled taking care of him was great. But I don't remember the Jesse leaving chapter, i need to go read that part. I agree with you, Joseph and Brian are the best outside the dorm. But part of me likes that them leaving frees up more space for other characters to have more screen time, hopefully the mentees. Although I hope they'll make an appearance in some break between years or terms.

2025-07-11 17:55:40 +0000 UTCWell said! And it's also my favorite of the one shots. While I am impatiently waiting for next week and the new book to begin, I am so glad Matt took the time to write these.

2025-07-11 17:40:53 +0000 UTCI was hoping it would be Joseph and Brian. Thank you, Matt! It was a powerful story, for the reasons that David stated in his comment. The "Shut up! I'm not crying, you're crying" statement from the story totally applied to me. I was emotional through the whole thing. You did a magnificent job with Joseph and Brian throughout the series, Matt. I've made it no secret that outside of the guys in the dorm (you know what I mean), these were my two favorites. I just finished re-reading Book 1 for the umpteenth time last night, so Jesse leaving at the end of Year 13 and his conversation with Danny was fresh on my mind. His perspective on the changes that happen to students at Kingswood was also well done. (In case someone hasn't read Book 1 in forever, Jesse was the Year 13 student who supervised/mentored Danny in the weight room when he started his serious fitness journey.)

2025-07-11 17:38:52 +0000 UTCI love this story, it's easily my favourites of these one shots. It hit on multiple important moments that I really liked getting to see. And it's very emotional for different reasons at different points, but specially the present day part. You really just hit us with the fear of starting Kingswood, the hurt of the break up, the worry of handling their mentees and the sadness of leaving all in a single story. Damn! I guess who this story would be about when you first told us the title, but it was so much more than I expected.
