Discussion Post #3

Coucou,

Two things for this post-release discussion. The first part is a letter, and the second part is hopefully from you.

First,

Again, thank you for playing The Night Muse. This has been a true labor of love. When I started writing erotic stories, I had no experience making "games". Some of you might recall the binary choices of The Fairy Prince, which I first published on CHYOA. It was, for the most part, a story of choosing between "sweet" or "rough" options. Clearly, The Night Muse was more ambitious. A gauntlet of trials and errors. I studied Twine guides and forums like they were religious texts, but still made hundreds of hair-raising mistakes. It can be a lonely and infuriating process. But the moments of discovery made it worthwhile.

I say this to suggest that anyone with a vision and ambition can produce their own stories. Even if you've never touched Twine or Ren'Py or whatever. The gay interactive erotica community is a bubble within a bubble on the internet. But I can think of very few places where the global gay community comes together to be so vulnerable and sex-forward and playful. Of course, it can be reflexive to think of NSFW games as degenerate, and thus not worth deeper consideration. After all, don't we play them in secret? But I think this is our sword and shield, our bread and butter. We've always carved identities and culture from secrets. Shared secrets. Discos, truck stops, bathhouses. Chatrooms, ballrooms, bedrooms. The Night Muse, Reform School, Grizzly Grove. We often get put into bubbles, but the thing about bubbles is that they rise.

When I finished writing The Fairy Prince four years ago, I included a note at the end of the game: "Be proud. Do not be ashamed. And never forget that faggots are magical." To some people, we're just oddities of sexuality and gender. Sometimes our own families and governments want to shame us. Sometimes we embody that shame. It can mutate us until we become quiet, confused, and invisible. No one should be invisible. One thing that NSFW games affords us is the opportunity to confront our desires and sexual imaginations. It reminds us that other people share these feelings and that we aren't degenerate oddities. We're human, like all the others, but with a touch of something peculiar. You could call that peculiarity anything you want. I call it magic.

However you can, wherever you are, don't let yourself become invisible. Be your own muse.

Now,

As I've mentioned here and there, this is the last story from me. I wanted to finish The Night Muse with a neat narrative bow on top, but with enough story for someone to continue things, if they so desired.

That said, I want this discussion post to act as a sort of Ask Me Anything. You can ask about the development process, the narrative, certain characters, certain scenes or events, references in the story—whatever you want! I'd also love to hear about your Magpie. What's the story of your character? Who did you become friends with, or hook up with on Halloween night, or relate to in an unexpected way? What vigor discipline did you focus on, or which obscure character that only appears once stole your attention? Mine is Kolton. Woof.

Or you can just drop by to say hello. I'd love to hear from you.

hi Voir, not sure if you still read this. Anyway, I'm slowly trying to go through all the 7 romances -and I still find something new, which is fun. Still working on that guide 😅 So I've been curious... what had you planned for the 2nd semester of year 1? it was quite close so you must have had something quite detailed in mind... Also I was wondering, would you feel comfortable somehow to share your notes on the various students, I'm very curious about everyone's backstory! I remember you had quite a lot of material for Clay for example. I mean, sharing in some way depending of what you feel comfortable about, like one by one, , as a bonus content here on the page... whatever is good. I have also a couple of actual questions: so, Marcus was convinced that Lachlan and the others were planning a generational coup, but what would have been the endgame (for real or according to Marcus)? create a magpie dominance on the other vigors? or what? I'm not fully sure... By the way, how come that Paul was so loyal to Marcus? He seems to go really deep and I don't get the connection: was he just a weak mind convinced by Marcus charisma? a fanatic in himself? Ah, and speaking of, was PJ really Paul's son in the end? :)

LukaM

Since you mention that Kolton, Eddie, Kristian, and Romeo will play a large role in the second Semester, could you explain how each of their stories will add more depth to what the guys will have to face? You mention that if we agree with Marcus's plan, there will be consequences for the Hooked characters. But what will happen if the love interests find out about the deal, especially Clay, Max & PJ? How will they feel about Milo after it? How does the staff at Jericho feel about having a traitor as a student?

Riji

thank you so much for your patience and for all these information! you're exceptional. It's interesting that the twins are the ones projected to fail, they're probably amongst the people that are less defined by their ability of use magic so it fits. The idea of a Milo/Oliver showoff sounds extra exciting! Thank you again and I'll probably have other curiosities soon... 😁

LukaM

- Apocrypha is Marcus's way of referring to the "unaccepted magics". In truth, those with fairies and those with vigor have access to the same powers. But Jericho has a moderated, academic approach to power. They want to educate people that will go on to influence the entire world, and in order to do that, they need to be subtle and skillful with their powers. They teach the students what they need to know, not everything they can know. Meanwhile, the fairies teach their protégées the full arsenal of abilities without many guardrails. That's how you get a situation like the police officers showing up in Oliver's Wrath chapter. Totally unfettered sex-magic getting noticed by normies. Speaking of Oliver: yes, he's the so-called "apocryphal son". Marcus learned about Joel's history when he had him Hooked. He knows that Oliver has enormous power: he turned Joel gay, which in turn gave Joel vigorous powers, and not only that, but a Magpie. If it weren't for Oliver, Joel would have never been at Jericho Academy. Oliver is the ultimate weapon in Marcus's eyes, and he wants access to that level of power. If Oliver can make a vigorous person, maybe he can un-make them. Maybe he can make Marcus a Magpie. - All of the current Seniors would pass. As for the second years: Gabriel would fail, as foreshadowed by Santiago's concern about his lack of focus due to Griffin. In this current version, I had them resolve their relationship in the Week 5 scene near the end. But in the complete story, Griffin takes a semester off for rehab. Gabriel is not able to simply focus on vigor studies. He's stressed and anguished. Ultimately, he fails his exam. When Griffin learns that Gabriel failed his exam, he volunteers to not take his test. They both lose their powers and memories of Jericho together. But if you romance Gabriel, you would have the opportunity to use Manipulation powers to return his memories, or as much as you can. The other second years pass their exams, and all of the first years pass their exams. - Exactly. Marcus didn't betray the MC, but he does have a "if I die" contingency plan. That plan was to send a trove of documents to the military. That's how Kolton would find his way onto the island without getting caught. Marcus described how to get there. He also succeeds in finding the "apocryphal son", as well as Micah, and warns them about Jericho's ultimate plan. Or what he thinks is Jericho's ultimate plan: new world order. Of course, they've always produced people into positions of power, but Marcus tells them that eventually, Magpies will control every corner and crevice of the world. Ironic, because that's what he thinks Dominators were meant to do. And doubly ironic, because if Oliver could turn him into a Magpie, he'd accept that offer. - After the chaos of the second year, Jericho ramps up its surveillance of magical individuals. That includes people with fairy magic. They barely manage to resolve the military problem without everything getting ruined. That seems to confirm Marcus's warnings to Oliver and Micah. An interesting thing about Micah is that he's been stuck in his "fairy trials" for years, so he still has access to his fairy. He has yet to duel his other "fairy prince" to win his powers permanently. That said, Rae informs the other fairies that they need to prepare for a war. Drama and a sex war unfolds. Milo (Night Muse) and Oliver (Fairy Prince) eventually meet on the battlefield of... well, the bed.

Oh, my guide is planned to be rather 'dry', just indicating what are the consequences and the requirements of the various choices through the game (and yes, week 5 is quite complex to structure), so I'm sure there's nothing surprising, but I did to avoid lose track of stuff so maybe it's useful! Couple of quick questions :) - what are exactly the apocrypha? are they connected to faerie magic? in the Manipulation vaulting Midterm, Marcus mentions that he's looking for the apocryphal son -which I suppose he's the main character of the fairy prince... what's the link? - they say that the final exams are harrowing and only some of the students pass it. Did you have plans to make any of the students fail the exam? - here we're going into the realms of the unknown considering nothing of it happened, but you said that in the second year the world powers learn about Jericho -was it meant to be the last act of Marcus or something like that, as he couldn't win the war with Lachlan decides to throw a wrench in the wheels and alert the world powers of Jericho's existence as final revolutionary action? - also, why would the fairies go to war with the vigorous? 😅

LukaM

♥ No wiki but the comments here or on the HGG discord discuss some of the unique and secret scenes.

voirleprince

i'm going to miss this game 😭 not thtat its going away but is there a wiki so i know how to milk EVERY moment that we have???

HIERO

I can also share your guide to people here. I'm curious myself about what I'll learn from it. No worries about asking questions! That's exactly what this discussion post is meant for. * If you defended the academy, then the second semester would focus on working with Joel. If you joined forces with Marcus, then you would work with him to sabotage May's research (ref: my response to Riji). Either way, the end of the semester results in Marcus's death. If you were pro-Jericho, either you or Max kill him. If you were anti-Jericho, then Lachlan kills him. His legacy remains regardless, because apocryphal powers have been introduced to the academy. Another wrench in the system. If you were pro-Jericho: the focus is on helping Max grieve and learning a couple "good" apocryphal powers. If you were anti-Jericho: learning a couple "bad" apocryphal powers. Your new powers get to be used every so often, like how Clay used Engage during the Rec Trials. Also, when given the chance to expose your complicity, Marcus doesn't betray you, and whoever your "gift" was from Marcus (Max, Clay, PJ, or Keelin) becomes unshackled. Obviously, at a development level, this streamlines the consequences of your "dark deal", since Marcus's story is done. Your "dark deal" choice become quite relevant again in your last year, when the "fairy magic" vs. "vigor magic" plot fires off. * He grew up outside of Tallahassee. A small town. More of a swamp than a town. His father ran the local junk yard. As a kid he liked to run across the heaps of refuse. Then school happened. He started noticing the things people would throw away. Fresh food, clean clothes, old games. His father would smack him if he tried taking things home. Something about having dignity. Clay stopped taking things but his dad still hit him. His dad was a lonely divorcee and mom took off to Vegas to be a late-bloomer showgirl. Didn't work out for her. They didn't hear from her anyways. I had her name as Maggie. At some point, if you were a Clay romancer, she would try to write him. Dad projected his misery onto Clay but costumed that in discipline. As Clay grew up, he got taller than most boys. Bigger, too. People seemed to respect him when he didn't say much. Eventually he wasn't the "undignified" trash man's kid. He started doing amateur MMA with the other trailer park guys. When he lost a match he could hear his dad's voice. He trained harder. He wanted to be indomitable. Also, there was something about being on the mat with another guy, a funny feeling. He put that out of mind. Dignity became the most important thing to him, but no matter how much he got, it never felt right. Something else was gnawing at him. Maybe if he worked harder he could get it to go away. Etc. * Maybe. He's loosely based on a client I've designed for. * Dominator is Josh, a tall nerdy dude: sweet in the streets, freak in the sheets. We met the Restorer, Romeo. Possessor is Gunner, a scruffy and chummy Brasileiro, real name Gilberto: unlike his namesake, does not like soccer but likes to wrestle. Manipulator is Lucky, has history with Astor who calls Lucky "Mazza": a rich kid who acts like a chav, likes to give tattoos. Transformer is Callahan, an Irish ray of sunshine: a ballerino and lap dance expert. Magpie is Buckley, a self-described straight boy, but had a fairy for one day before his vigor awakening: initially cold and a bit homophobic ("that's disgusting, get away from me"), has sex with girls at the girls' division to try and prove a point. Obviously their stories go further but there's a summary. * That's a good question. Nothing that I completely regret but some things I know could be better. I think the Red Hand card game with Astor could have been explained better. I wish I had made some sort of illustrated map of Jericho Academy for context. I also wish I had made an encyclopedia of vigor powers as you learn them, since some of them only appear once. I know that's not what you asked but I do think about missed opportunities.

voirleprince

I based on the fact that with the Prequel ending (who we choose at the end) + when the MC go find Lachlan to inform him he has found Jackson (based on the Prequel ending, we will see a different person Lachlan is having sex with). If we chose Sterling, there's a Polaroid of him (no. 14), seeing him having sex with Lachlan. Just my guess, but honestly, I feel Lachlan is either poly or very open in his relationship

Riji

By all that you write, it sounds like you have a ton of notes for the future, they must be a treasure trove of stuff, I hope that sooner or later you'll feel comfortable to share them or something! (I would understand if you don't) I'm still working on the guide, but I'll be happy to send it to you or share it in some fashion once it's ready. Couple of comments on your answers: surprised that Nelson is not among the 100% gays, and also Max and Conrad as an actual couple is the cutest. And of course those beget other questions 😄 please feel free to stop replying if it gets bothersome. For example *) considering that the first semester ends in a vigorous civil war, I assume that your choice would have had consequences that we would have seen in the subsequent semesters. Did you have any ideas on how to implement that part progressively and what would have happened? *) I'm curious, what is Clay's actual story? I kinda reconstructed that he is coming from a rather poor and violent household but not more than that... *) is Alexei on the spectrum? *) who would have been the new first years and what would their personality have been, to make them different than the current students? *) is there something that made the cut and you put it into the game but then regretted it a bit?

LukaM

my favourite non-sex scene is the one when Sammy and Jackson sing under the clocktower, because it gives a warm feeling of normalcy amongst the craziness. Also basically all the chats with the competitors during the rec trial are very poignant (Sawyer's "as men who like to fuck other men" speech, Clay's introspective moment and PJ's heartbreaking scenes).

LukaM

wait, are Lachlan and Sterling a couple?? Where do you notice that? Also, interesting comment about Keelin, is that why he's the default 'toy' choice if you go villain?

LukaM

Thank you! ♥ - If I did continue, it wouldn't be any time soon. But your comment made me think, how interesting it would be if each semester was written by someone different. It's not a likely or feasible idea. But it would make for a true community project. Maybe I'd write the last semester. Unserious speculation on my part. - Clay is very possessive. I don't think he would ever go for romantic non-monogamy. But if I had to pick, he'd probably "allow" his lover to have their own submissive lover. His biggest issue is someone else acting like a provider for you. But if you argued that you want to be someone else's "Clay", he might be convinced. Nelson, Gabriel, and of course, Sammy come to mind. Still, it's unlikely. - Conrad would replace Junior as The Six's Dom. The threads of that plot were started when his dad, Cooper, mentored the group prior to the Rec Trials. Nelson stays Restorer. Nico would be replaced by the new first year Possessor named Gunner. Israel stays Manip. Robin would replace Alexei as the new Transformer. - The MC would follow Graham's footsteps of not competing in future Rec Trials, since he already has his frat invitation. It's a tough call who would win between Jackson, Clay, and the new first year Magpie. Conrad also puts up a hell of a fight in his "power bottom" arc, and Nelson goes far in order to prove himself against the new first year Restorer, Romeo. - Keelin was born into this peculiar world, so he wouldn't blink twice about his parentage. That said, he feels guilt for nepotism and doubts his own skill, so whoever his other parent is, he'd just compare himself. - Joel's return to campus spurs a research initiative regarding vigor bursts and Hooking. Joel's encounter with "apocryphal" magics engaged his powers once more. Jackson's "awakening" occurred because of the vigorous outpour during your Rec Trial. Not to mention Lachlan and Esmerelda's storylines during their youth. All of this considered, May will try to find a way to re-awaken PJ's powers. She will try to replicate Joel and Jackson's re-awakenings, which will no doubt introduce apocryphal magics to the campus curriculum. This could involve PJ confronting Paul inside of Paul's memories, as well as PJ's own childhood.

voirleprince

Thank you, RP! ♥ Max sounds lucky to have his Dommy boyfriend.

voirleprince

Great story, first thing first. Love everything about it. If there's a chance in the future, would you consider continuing the story? Cause it's so good. Would love to see the 2nd & 3rd semesters with more storylines to explore the guys. Also, considering if we convince Clay to be in a poly relationship in the 2nd or 3rd semester, who would he be more inclined to include from all the guys? And who's the replacement for Junior, Alexei & Nico when they graduate and Milo, Nelson/Sammy & Israel need 3 new vigors for The Six Would you consider letting Clay win a Recreational Trial for his last semester & join Club Hippocampe, Clay I think will be very protective of Milo & Jericho after everything during his 2nd semester. And since you kinda make it canon that Lachlan & Sterling are a couple, how will Keelin react around his two dads? And I love the fact that if you romance Clay, Milo & Clay is a reflection of Lachlan & Sterling, so it's such a good story Another thing, do you ever consider letting PJ have his vigor again in future semesters & rejoin the academy & possibly meet Paul (considering if he's not off & just in a coma waiting to be awakened) to hash out their problems & meet his siblings (since Paul did said he has sons other than PJ, who he's abandon since little)

Riji

Oh, and I’d nominate Romeo as the one-off character that stole my heart (among other things…)

RP

As for my Magpie: my favourite route through the game is focussing on Domination, romancing Max, making friends with Sawyer and Astor, and putting Conrad and Max in their place when they try to mess with my boy Max 😈

RP

I don’t think I have any questions, but I do want to say how much I love The Night Muse. It’s beautiful, sweet, hot, and filthy in equal measure tied together in your wonderful writing.

RP

Oh, and the guide sounds fun!

voirleprince

* Definitely. Gabriel and Griffin's storyline didn't resolve until the end of their third year. At one point, Griffin took a semester off for rehab. Once Junior graduated, Nelson fell into a depression. Romeo, the new first year Restorer, would antagonize Nelson and challenge him to become the best bottom on campus. That competition would help Nelson out of his funk. He would even make it to the finals of a Recreational Trial. Depending on choices, Joel would return to campus to graduate on time. At one point, Israel would become frustrated with Jericho Key's libido effects, and try to not have sex for a month. If you didn't tempt him and he succeeded, he would thank you with a full day of sex. In development terms, it'd just be one Week without Israel sexual contact, and then the following Week, a trigger for reward. There's a lot of other ideas I had but those come to mind. * Before I coded the first Week, I had a list with this info. It's hiding somewhere or I deleted it. From what I can recall, 100% gay before Jericho Key: Astor, Sammy, Gabriel, Junior, and Nico. Most other guys fell on the bisexual spectrum, and for the straight guys, the island's vigorous overload opened some doors. Mind you, those were pre-development notions. Now I'd probably add Clay to the gays, considering his story is about repression becoming aggression. * Nelson and Junior for sure. Santiago and Marlon, which would have been explored further. Depending on your romance choices, some relationships could have bloomed. Jackson and Robin. Max and Conrad. That said, two particular relationships wouldn't: Gabriel needed to free himself from Griffin, as that Week 5 scene suggests, and Nico healed from Joel's absence, so he wouldn't open that door again even if Joel returned. * Originally, I had three pairs that each functioned yin-and-yang. Dominators and Restorers: power of taking, power of giving. Possessors and Manipulators: control the exterior, control the interior. Transformers and Summoners: become someone else, someone else becomes. The idea of the Summoner was that they could summon an illusory copy of someone: voice, body, smell. Fully interactive, fully believable if the Summoner was skilled. But I scrapped it pretty quickly so I didn't work out the "Jericho science" of it. I'm sure it would've been something between a Dominator and Manipulator, mental tricks and pheromonal powers, so that what is actually just air molecules makes other people "feel" the summon. ♥

voirleprince

I'm glad it worked out in that case!

voirleprince

Thank you, Mammon! ♥ These are great questions. Let's see... - Non-sex scene: when Max discovers it's Sammy eating all of the blackberry jam. Sex scene: the one in Week 2 where Clay catches Alexei looking like him, but you take the fall for Alexei. I can hardly choose favorites but those come to mind. - My favorite character is Nico. These types of games tend to have characters without much (obvious) baggage, so it's easy to sex them up and quickly feel like the center of their world. But Nico carries around grief like a suit of armor. It's difficult to get through to him. Until you finally do, and it feels even more personal. - My favorite vigor discipline depends on my mood. A Dominator/Restorer playthrough if you're looking for the hottest scenes. Possession/Transformation if you're looking for the most creative and unexpected sex scenes. And Manipulation if you want to strike the middle. - For the second semester, I had a few ideas. Valentine's, Easter, and the May Day Festival. The V-Day event was a formal prom event, with suits and slow dancing, so on. Easter was a hunt for the "secret bunny", getting clues from each guy you sleep with until you solve the location. The May Day Festival, a little similar to the Solstice bonfire, but with each student making a speech and then jumping into a mound of flowers, until everyone was piled up. A May Day King would be crowned.

voirleprince

Thank you for playing! ♥ For the Manipulation midterm, you need to have either 1) played through the prologue and selected an ending or 2) start with a game preset from Week 3/4/5, where they select a prologue ending for you.

voirleprince

these all sound great ideas but one thing I have to say: I'm glad you didn't do the recreationals minigame 😄 I don't think the game needed it and it would have been a nightmare to trace the results for the story. I'm also rather happy that Conrad and Clay didn't end up being rivals to get you, in addition to the reason you mention it feels like a flattening of both characters on the basic Dominator behaviour and I like they were fleshed out a bit more getting their own personality.

LukaM

wonderful answers, thank you! yes, indeed week 5 was complex; it was not my intention to underestimate your work on the last week, I had just noticed that week 1 and 2 had several linked triggers that progressively disappeared. Love the description on how you approached the kinks, and now that you described the second and third year I really would love to see them! 😄 are you sure there is no coder that would help you by taking full care of the coding part so you have free rein in doing your story thing? ;) (I have to say that Twine looks rather intuitive even for me that I'm not a programmer - I'm using it to create my Night Muse guide - so I think it'll be a piece of cake for someone actually expert) Also, totally agree about Alexei and Robin. Alexei in particular is a character I feel we've just seen the surface of. And of course I have more questions: *) your comment about Astor was very illuminating so I'm curious, were there any characters for which you had prepared a backstory/conflict with the plan of developing it and you didn't manage? *) among the students, who are actually gay? *) also among the students and alumni, which are/were the couples both at school and those who survive in the real world after Jericho? *) did you think of other vigors before settling on the final 5? were you thinking of introducing new vigors, categories of vigorous people or different ways of doing magic? I'm thinking of course the apocrypha magic introduced in week5 and for which we only see a glimpse, but also beyond that.

LukaM

First of all, I'm in awe of all of your hard work bringing the various mechanics of TNM to life! I've very briefly tried to learn how to use Twine and found myself almost immediately overwhelmed, so I can only imagine how much work it took to not only set everything up, but build on it with each update! For questions: what's your favorite scene / character / school? (in terms of sexiness or otherwise?) Also, did you have any gimmicks or events that you were thinking of including in future updates? I feel like after Halloween and Christmas, we were definitely due for a sexy easter egg hunt or something similar lol

Mammon

Well my first play through i focused on Donination and fell inlove with Clay and Conrad, I made friends with Max and Sawyer and PJ and Griffin then I chose the “evil” ending first and chose Conrad as my secondary love interest and honestly he wish had a main interest route. But it was good and now I’m on my fourth play through I been hooked with this game and been playing it for like a week straight now. Also what choice do I have to do the manipulation midterm

RockySpaceBoat

Hi, dear Luka! ♥ The first week had to introduce the core variables. Once they became streamlined, I didn't want to introduce too many convoluted triggers. Especially once I realized that I'd be wrapping things up in Week 5. More variables and triggers would feel like promises I'd need to keep, and then they would invariably (pun) be rushed. But as far as complex triggers, I might recommend checking out the code during Week 5. It's a hurricane of levers and pulleys regarding Marcus's deal, your romance, your secondary romance, your relationship points, vigor stats, secret scenes locked/unlocked, Sammy "fixed" or "not fixed", etc. Arguably the most complex code rests in those last two days on campus. * I had a lot of ideas. For instance, each school year would focus on a big problem. The first semester would give you the information and key players, and the second semester would resolve that problem. The first year was the "vigorous civil war" with Marcus and Joel—think of the first year as a "mystery" genre. The second year focused on The Six, and dealt with world governments discovering and trying to control or destroy Jericho —think of the second year as a "spy" genre, where you would often work with your fraternity. And the final year involved a confrontation between the "fairy" magics and the "vigorous" magics, Micah and Oliver and Milo and so on, and also a bit of time travel—think of the third year as a traditional "fantasy" genre. * The kinks were a fun inclusion. Of course, if the story had continued for three academic years, they would've been visited more often. For the sake of time, I didn't want to turn the story on its head in order to shoehorn kink scenes. I prefer sex scenes that do two things at once: relationship development and story development. Or in the case of flashback scenes, they are quick ways to summarize the passing of time alongside the evolution of shared intimacy. In any case, I think the kink descriptions and scenes offer a range of perspective. For people like Clay, Conrad, Nelson, and Gabriel, they act as sort of keys for their psyches. The kinks are present in nearly all of their scenes, even if not explicit. And then for others, like Nico, Israel, Astor, and Ahmed, they are inconsistent heightened pleasures. All of this to say: I think I included them when reasonable, but you're correct that there is still untapped potential. * Astor is a man full of guile, much like his uncle. Conrad is decidedly without guile. When Astor moves through a room, he calculates every face and word. Conrad doesn't care, he just barrels through with a smile. That said? Opposites attract. The most mysterious person to Astor is the least mysterious person of all. Astor is a product of the two real power brokers in the vigorous world: Simon Medi and Waldor Medi. Of course, those stories were to be further developed. They are the balancing beams between the fraternities and academy. Simeon is cutthroat and self-serving, while Waldor is unusually tender and considerate for a Medi. Astor feels drawn toward his uncle because that's what a traditional "Medi Man" acts like, while his father slowly chips away at that cold marble exterior. Considering Astor is the sole successor to the dynasty, he slowly unravels and confesses about those pressures. He wishes he could be as carefree as Conrad. On that note, there's a reason he's a "Possessor"—a symbolic reason, I mean, and that goes for each character in their respective discipline. * I wish I had more time for Alexei and Robin. They each represent a type of young gay man that doesn't get much showtime in gay media, let alone NSFW erotica. * You know that scene near the end of Week 5 where you choose where to go / who to visit? Make sure you have enough relationship points with Ruby the librarian. She'll send you on a little espionage mission. 😉 * I said I was done after The Fairy Prince. Look how that turned out! But seriously, I don't know if I have it in me to code another game. The story is my favorite part. The coding is grueling for me. And it's not even particularly complex code, compared to other games! So yeah... I don't know if I have the constitution (vigor?) to do it all over again.

voirleprince

thank you for your comment that is spot-on. And yes, Fairy Prince was basically a linear story, once you start creating branches is a different thing altogether (I did notice that the first couple of weeks of Night Muse, especially the first, were more complex in terms of keywords triggers, I assume that you had to simplify it a bit on the way) About questions, I have several already and probably more on the way ;) : *) I remember you mentioned once that your original plan was to create the full three years of school with a different mystery each year or semester. Did you have already some plans for possible stories or development, and so which ones? *) the part where you find out the kinks of the various people was fun but maybe a bit underdeveloped -it comes into the picture only a couple of times I think. Were you planning to do more with that, and it was cut, or it was just mostly a curiosity and an occasion to show some fun scenes in the roster? (Im asking because some of the backstories of why that specific character got that kink were pretty interesting and I felt there was a lot of narrative potential) *) is Astor in love with Conrad? (or just lusty about him) Astor is an interesting character and he clearly hides something (to the others for sure, to himself too also?) behind the haughty facade, what was he meant to be? *) which character you would have liked to develop more but you didn't manage because it didn't fit the story or because of time constraints? *) where do you meet Kolton?? 😮 *) can you really exclude that you won't take the writing mantle anymore at all or maybe in the future... 😁

That's a fun question. - The "Who do you visit?" scene near the end of Week 5 contains a lot of salvaged content. Romeo, Kolton, Eddie, and Kristian were going to be larger characters in Semester 2. I condensed their stories instead of cutting them entirely. - There was an epilogue path for Peter, the protagonist's brother from my previous game. I instead moved him into a cameo role in the Possession frat epilogue. - The Recreational Trials was going to be a mini-game with a vigor (health) bar, stamina bar, and a set of vigor abilities to "battle" with depending on your stats. But it was taking me too long to develop. I also wanted to expand that into a full mini-game where you could "battle" all of the characters in a grand tournament mode. Lots of smaller scenes were cut throughout development because they didn't fit into the narrative flow. Here are two I remember cutting from Week 5: - Junior found a cat sleeping in the bed of Sterling's truck. Nelson named him Drifter. They brought him into the dorm common room since it was winter. The cat essentially became adopted by all the boys. Conrad cooked him fish. Nico stitched him a collar. - Sammy was upset that Jericho Academy didn't have a school song, so he wrote one. Astor gave his "Medi permission" to have the lyrics engraved on the walls of Medi Lecture Hall. The lyrics changed depending on whether you "fixed" Sammy or not, or romanced him. And here are some of the earliest plot ideas that I scrapped: - Conrad and Clay were supposed to be rivals. First they would bully you, then eventually fight each other to claim you. But it made the overall narrative too submissive, and I wanted the player to have agency in that regard. - Max was not supposed to be a romance option. I planned on making him just the "best friend" who got bullied into being Conrad's toy. Half of the time, he would be transformed into Carmen for Conrad's pleasure. Part of your story was going to be getting strong enough to win back Max's independence for him. - Originally I planned on four romance options, and each of those options would earn you a rival who also wanted your man. A Clay romance with Sammy rivalry. A Gabriel romance with Griffin rivalry. A Nelson romance with Junior rivalry. An Ahmed romance with Sawyer rivalry. Some of those rivalries were going to be cutthroat. Others were going to be playful. There's a hundred more examples but that's what I recall off the top of my head!

I always find cut content interesting. was there anything you cut during development? Characters or paths or scene's you could elaborate on?
