The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as filmed brilliantly by Peter Jackson, is certainly not a word for word adaptation. However, it retains the base principles of the book and certainly of the author. The Hobbit trilogy, which is based on one relatively short book is filled to the brim with filler and made up battles and other encounters that are very much NOT part of the original story. It is entertaining in its own way, but not anything like The Hobbit as it was written by Tolkien. Martin Freeman's performance is great and I thought that he was perfectly cast. I enjoyed many of the other performances, but the movie should have been one movie rather than three.
