The MAGA Lesbian Who “Left the Left”
Added 2025-04-28 18:38:16 +0000 UTCIn the wake of Lesbian Visibility Week, Kat and I examine the career and ideological trajectory of one of YouTube’s longest-visible lesbians, for better and for worse. In doing so, we unpack truths about internalized homophobia, how tweaks to social media algorithms incentivize radicalization, and the dishonesty at the heart of the “leaving the left” grift.

I think it’s important to point out the actuallesbians subreddit is actually fairly pro trans. It does have some issues with transphobia, but it not the “terf headquarters”. To make things more confusing, the subreddit that is truly a “terf headquarters” is lesbianactually. Both subreddits have problems, but the first one at least tries to be inclusive and bans TERFs pretty quickly. The second does not. If you are a trans lesbian, the traaaaaaaaaaaansbian subreddit exists (that may or may not be the correct number of A’s lol), which my understanding is very nice trans positive sub! Stay safe out there on reddit. It’s a crazy place sometimes.

2025-09-03 00:30:22 +0000 UTCHearing Kat talk about the radicalization of many online lesbian spaces in the late 2010s, reminds me of how the transphobia radicalization often went hand in hand with ace discourse and acephobia. I remember as a young asexual woman at this time (about 2016-2018ish) a lot of very online spaces specifically tumblr really developed a radical strain of “asexuals are straight” and denying either the existence of asexuality or saying it was functionally the same as being a straight person. Which as an asexual person on the aromantic spectrum (I identified as aromantic at the time but my own understanding has evolved significantly), I can tell you that my experience has been a lot different than that of my straight contemporaries. But no one wanted to hear that at the time. Interestingly, I’ve never encountered ace exclusionists in real life. Though the ace discourse I saw when I was just starting to really come out did make me feel very hesitant towards LGBTQ+ spaces. An underlying level of mistrust towards these spaces and not feeling like I should be there are still things I’m actively unlearning ten years after the fact. Just thought I’d share my memories of that time.

2025-06-10 03:01:18 +0000 UTCI like this podcast but I’m struck by how many of the recent episodes have been focused on criticizing women. I started listening to the Gwen Stefani episode back when it came out and just had to stop because I felt uncomfortable with it. It’s off putting how y’all are so careful to distance yourself from Arielle in this episode- emphasizing that you never opened her messages or were never that into her content, critiquing her for things that aren’t at all related to her politics, like you’re afraid to be seen giving her any amount of sympathy. This just doesn’t feel helpful.
