FYI: just like they did with "Kami", the English dub tried to remove religious references (while Toriyama just enjoyed trolling with them). Piccolo's emblem is the kanji for "demon", and it was often referred to as "the Demon King"; in the Catalan dub I grew up with he got called simply "Satanàs" (let me know if you need a translation). Even as a kid, for me it was quite simple that the "God" and the "Devil" in the series would just be two sides of the same thing. I understand why the people behind the English dub were uncomfortable with the religious references, but you folks may be missing a bunch of small details throughout the series.

If you think Popo is funny, you should see what Dragon Ball Abridged (a very popular hilarious fan-dub) did with him. This is an actual quote from the Abridged wiki: “Whilst the canonical Popo is a caring and gentle being, the abridged Mr. Popo is portrayed as thoroughly malevolent, violent, mean-spirited, ruthless, sexist, greedy, psychopathic, masochistic, sadistic, and an overall unpleasant individual, often being known to traumatize and mistreat those who train under him and simple acquaintances alike.”
