Don't mind me re-watching this for the 100th time while I wait for Abel's new album

Jules

Did you ever see those other music videos that were a part of this era? Would love to see your analysis because they all tied into each other and were a real vibe haha (don't mind me lol just re-watching your reactions in the lead-up to his new album). Love your work! :)

The amount of attention you pay to the lyrics really makes your reactions stand out! Loved your analysis, very very cool

I joined Patreon because of the brilliance of your YouTube analysis of After Hours. Abel left school and home at 17 and was homeless for years until the success of his House of Balloons mixed tape. He dropped the other two mixed tapes, Thursday and Echoes of Silence, the same year. The mixed tapes were repackaged by Republic records as Trilogy (with 3 bonus tracks). There is an MTV documentary, The Road to Release 2013 which explains his process up to his first studio album Kiss Land. Regarding your comment about him meeting the wrong girls, in his earlier music he seems more confident with โ€œprofessionalsโ€ and often reiterates the comment that he is better off alone. I am looking forward to your take on the rest of the discography. Nomads is an early Weeknd feature on a Ricky Hils song that encapsulates his mindset during this period. Sorry for running on with this comment. As you will find out XO fans are more than slightly obsessive albeit very welcoming and we love watching first reactions.

Loved this! If you get a chance you should react to the three bonus tracks from this album (Nothing Compares, Missed You, and Final Lullaby), they're the perfect ending to a perfect album

Aly I live for these essays thank you so much for the background! Iโ€™m absolutely living for the self awareness and all in on this deep dive!

Thankful for the lack of judgement Gwen ๐Ÿ˜„๐ŸŽ„

Omg, I loved your reaction so much and how you really got the message of each song. Itโ€™s funny you mention the Drake thing, since Abel (also from Toronto) actually dropped 3 songs anonymously back in 2011 online which Drake caught wind of and they built their relationship from there, with Abel actually giving Drake multiple songs for Take Care. When he dropped his first mixtape, no one knew who he was or what he looked like and people thought The Weeknd might have even been a band, and even now heโ€™s only done a handful of video interviews lmao. I think one thing about him is that he basically says everything he needs to about his life in his music so it would be great if you went into his discography in order from the beginning, starting with the House of Balloons mixtape (still his most critically acclaimed project). Heโ€™s always been very self-aware/brutally honest in his music and thatโ€™s one of my favourite things about him. Sorry for this long ass essay LMAO!!

Aly

Loved this ๐Ÿฅฐ not sure if you are aware, but hereโ€™s a fun Zayn connection as he is in a relationship with Gigi hadid. The weeknd and Bella hadid have dated on and off for a very long time (also dua lipa dates their brother anwar hadid)!

Lisa

Please just keep the tree up year round. There are no rules and it brings me joy.

โ€œThereโ€™s some honest shit on this albumโ€ if only you knew what was in store for you๐Ÿ˜‚

Since you love his eerie, dark sound, you would particularly enjoy Trilogy, a collection of his first three mixtapes (House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence). I really recommend listening to those before anything else if you continue to explore Abelโ€™s discography... they are just timeless & incomparable to any other musical body of work Iโ€™ve ever come across.
